I had nothing to go by for motive or how a possible killer is related to any victims until the big reveal in the last two chapters. And while these things might seem small to you, they might be enough to get your house guest to reconsider their living plans.

A bunch of strangers are together during a certain amount days, and slowly, one by one, a guest gets murdered. Ultimately, however, you need to remember that keeping them in your house for too long can damage your relationship just as much. An intriguing cast, an isolated location, a raging storm and the threat of death in every dark corner: An Unwanted Guest reads like Agatha Christie with a shot of adrenalin. The Couple Next Door had a lot of dialogue—more of “he said” then “she said” type of dialogue, which at times, began to get hard to read and a bit repetitive with no proper flow to the story, or the characters. Even though this book has several characters in it I was never confused in who was who or had any trouble in keeping them all straight. For example, you may want to place a specific time limit on their stay, such as by saying they can stay up to two nights and must leave by 11am on the second morning of their stay.

They made reader love them, they made reader sad, they made reader angry, they made reader laugh, they made reader cry, and they made reader believe in the promise of love and home. When the electricity goes out, the murderer seized the opportunity to tidy up some loose ends by getting rid of unnecessary friends. I've noticed that this is a trend of modern mysteries, where instead of offering great clues and red herrings, a lot of them just have characters acting crazy as the element that propels the story along.However, there are situations where someone who was once a guest gains the status of a tenant through their own actions or the actions of the owner. We all loved the feeling we got from the storm and the spooky feeling of being trapped with people you don’t know, with nowhere to go and no one can come to help.

A quiet hotel in the midst of winter, contrasting personalities put together, and murderous events happening over the course of a weekend makes up this chilling and suspenseful murder mystery by Shari Lapena. Much like Agatha Christie —Lapena does a great job of building suspense and making each character’s past cloudy enough that I had a hard time figuring out who was the guilty party. A tidy little mystery with a satisfying conclusion, An Unwanted Guest takes place in a remote hotel cut off from civilization by an ice storm.
