The nitty-gritty: Lots of potential, but unfortunately, this story was too problematic for my taste. Unfortunaly, my review is going to be print-only and in Czech, but this is my opinion in a nutshell. The constant barrage of physical and mental abuse thrown at Ophelia made me so sad and uncomfortable, and I ended up hating her because she never did anything about it! At about the 200 page mark I was starting to get worried that I might never finish it, and seeing that I still had 300 pages to go, I finally decided to skim the remainder, something I don’t think I’ve ever done before.

Throughout the course of the book, the two never really warm up to each other, and I was frustrated by their “relationship. In an effort to protect her own family and find out the truth about her new spouse, she unwillingly agrees to the duty, but she subsequently regrets it. Ophelia and Thorn eventually fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that they are from different Arkans. I hope I didn’t sound rude, in the end of the day people have different ways of thinking and I did find your review interesting!Note: the one thing I did like about Ophelia is that I believe she is asexual, as she mentions more than once that she’s never felt sexual attraction before. I don't know why I've never read much from the steampunk genre (let alone French steampunk, from which this story is translated). Once she arrives, Ophelia finds that the man she is supposed to be marrying doesn’t really seem to have an interest in getting to know her. After two years and seven months biding her time on Anima, her home ark, it is finally time to act, to put what she has discovered in the Book of Farouk to use.

Dabos delights and thrills readers as Ophelia finds herself caught in the middle of political intrigue and deadly secrets with nothing but her wits to keep her alive. I read the novel in a couple of sittings, even if there wasn't as much action (so far) as I thought there would be. Normally I pass my books on to another Little Library but I am keeping these two to share with friends.A Winter's Promise" is the very first volume of the Mirror Visitor Quartet, showcasing the moment when Ophelia's world is turned upside down.
