About this deal

Although still popular to this day, the sitar is believed to have been invented in the 13th century, over 700 years ago. A sitar can be tuned a variety of ways and can be tuned to different keys usually from B to D. A fairly standard tuning is the key of C; however, certain performers such as Ravi Shankar tune their sitars to C#. Also note that various ragas demand that the sitar be re-tuned to a different key. For most beginners, especially westerners, it is recommended to start out with the key of C.

Each set has its own bridge. Drone and sympathetic strings can only be strummed. Playable strings can be fretted. Despite the song’s popularity, Shankar wasn’t impressed when he first heard Harrison playing the sitar.Note: Like guitar tablature notation, my article assumes that the top string represents the bottom string closest to the floor. Standard Tuning Starting in the late 1970s, Pakistan International Airlines in-flight music featured the sitar to evoke feelings of nostalgia for the homeland among the Pakistani diaspora. [34] [35] Ravi Shanker was a highly decorated musician, considered to be the best sitar player of the 20 th century. In Muslim tradition, some scholars believe the sitar was invented—or, much accurately, developed—by Indo-Persian Sufi singer Amir Khusrow (c. 1253-1325).

Nikhil Banerjee is another artist who needs special mention as he modified his sitar further with the help of Hiren Roy, taking it to an unimaginable level of depth and tonal quality. Uma Shankar Misra, Balram Pathak, Rais Khan, Abdul Haleem Jaffar Khan, Devavrit Chaudhuri, Manilal Nag, Imrat Khan, Kartik Kumar and Shamim Ahmed are a few names from the long list of sitar players of the twentieth century. Jaya Bisbas, Manju Mehta, Kalyani Roy and Krishna Chakravorty are among the women sitar players, who earned a name for themselves in this field. Among the younger generation of artists, Shahid Parvez, Buddhaditya Mukherjee and Shujaat Khan have already made a name for themselves. A number of budding artists such as Shubhendra Rao, Niladri Kumar, Gourav Majumdar, Prateek Chaudhuri and many others, assure a bright future for this instrument. Learning to play the sitar is no easy feat. It requires years of rigorous training and dedication. Traditionally, students would undergo an apprenticeship under a guru, a renowned sitar maestro, passing down knowledge through the guru-shishya parampara (teacher-student tradition). Today, formal sitar education is available in music schools and universities, but the importance of personal mentorship remains. The Kinks' 1965 single " See My Friends" featured a "low-tuned drone guitar" that was widely mistaken to be a sitar. [5] Crosby's band, the Byrds, had similarly incorporated elements of Indian music, [20] using "only Western instrumentation", on their songs " Eight Miles High" and " Why" in 1965. [32] Psychedelic music bands often used new recording techniques and effects and drew on non-Western sources such as the ragas and drones of Indian music. The Electric Prunes appeared in early ads for the Vox Wah wah pedal, which touted the effect's ability to make an electric guitar sound like a sitar [33] The curved metal frets of a sitar are moveable and you can also reposition them to achieve a variety of pitches. The sitar produces the widest variety of pitches among all the existing stringed instruments. There are several mechanics to change the tone and pitch and it’s a little more involved than you’d find on your standard 6 string electric.

I was happy to oblige. This also gave me some insights about how to optimize the Jawari for resonance. I will deal with this in another article. But let me just say that I have gone through a few bridges in my time. Sitar, Veena, Tanpura, Dilruba.... I learned to set all of these. The basic principle is the same. Starting in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the sitar became more well known to Western audiences primarily through touring by the Indian musician Ravi Shankar. Interest in the sitar really exploded, though, when bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Traffic, and Fleetwood Mac used it in recordings and live performances. Often you will want to play the sitar but by the time you have fully tuned it the feeling and inspiration is gone. In these situations, my recommendation is to just tune the 1st two strings main strings – F & C and the chicari strings both to C. This should take less than a minute. 98% of your playing will be on these strings. It was also theorized in Muslim tradition that the sitar was invented, or rather developed by Amir Khusrow ( c.1253–1325), a famous Sufi inventor, poet and pioneer of Khyal, Tarana and Qawwali, during the 13th century. [7] [9] [10] [11] However, the tradition of Amir Khusrow is considered discredited by some scholars. [12] Whatever instruments he might have played, no record exists from this period using the name "sitar". [10] However, it also features an additional soundbox, ornate decorations, and two extra bass strings called “Kharaj.” The strings are tuned to a Low Pa and Low Sa (lower fifth and root), giving them an extra bass octave. The Vilayat Khan style sitar (VK) Mulism invasions in India starting from the early eighth century to fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, from the north- western front, exposed Indians to the music, literature and social customs of Turkish, Persian and central Asian cultures. Around this time the instrument called tambur or tanbur appeared on the Indian music scenario. Ameer Khusarau described the tambur as having four strings, two of silk and two of metal. InAin-i-Akbari, four tambur players are included among the thirty-six listed musicians of the court of Akbar. A variety of tanbur with three strings instead of four is termed as seh-tar.

During the 1700s, the sitar went from three to five strings, as was used in the Hamir-Raso by Rajasthan author Jodhraj. Sympathetic strings are used to enhance the sound of an instrument. They function as resonators. Within the sitar, there are either 11 or 13 strings. Below is the tuning for 13 strings. The last three in the upper octave). [ clarify] The player should re-tune for each raga. Strings are tuned by tuning pegs, and the main playing strings can be fine-tuned by sliding a bead threaded on each string just below the bridge. Indian scholars claim it’s of Indian origins, but Western scholars believe it’s more likely to have originated from West Asia.

Till the middle of the twentieth century sitar without tarabs was very popular, but lately this practice has become quite rare. Another type of sitar which was quite in vogue till the 1950s was the Kachhap sitar or Kachhua sitar. It was like an ordinary sitar, the only difference being that the resonator was flat instead of round in shape. This practice has now been discontinued. To make this tuning compitible with Ravi Shankarji's sitar, you simply need to change the number 4 string to our #4 bass bronze string cat# BRSIT4BS and tune it to low Sa, 2 octaves below middle C (or 1 octave below the #2 Sa string).
