About this deal

All is Shadow– A meaty three-glory objective card that scores when all your fighters are in enemy territory, and two or more are skulking in a Cover Hex or an Edge Hex. Smoke-wreathed, ethereal, dark, and deadly, aelven warband The Shadebornis clearly meant to exemplify the gloomy, threatening aura of Nethermaze’s undersea setting. That said, as seasoned modellers ourselves, we suspect newcomers mighthave a stressfultime putting these together. While it’s nothing short of wizardry to produce modelsthis acrobatic-lookingthat can be assembled without glue, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily easy to build, or that you can’t very easily bend or break a few spindly bits. We’ll have a closer look at everything in just a moment. Warhammer Underworlds: Nethermaze Review – Literature The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted,a replacement will be sent to you.

Warhammer Underworlds Nethermaze models

There are two things in the wallet: the all-important rulebook as well as the assembly guide for the miniatures. The guide is only one sheet of A4 as the miniatures are push-fit, so super easy to put together. There are, however, new keywords included in the this season: Map and Domain. Domain cards affect the battlefield, and can be used to change the world around the miniatures to their advantage – and the disadvantage of their foes. Map cards are a bit more ambiguous at this stage as there’s only one example of them in the new box, but they seem to be geared towards obtaining glory points at a risk. For example, the Detailed Map Fragment card in this box has an action that allows you to gain 1 spent glory point, but your opponent gets to play an upgrade without spending any glory points in response (provided, of course, they have one to play). Warhammer Underworlds: Nethermaze Review – Unboxing Many years ago, an outcast group of Idoneth and Khainite aelves seceded from their respective rulers in search of freedom and autonomy. Led by the Idoneth exile Queen Kia’tan, they founded an undersea haven which unfortunately turned out to be right on top of the ruins of Harrowdeep.* The fragments of her discoveries lie scattered throughout the Nethermaze… almost as though placed there for warbands to find. Smoke and Mirrors– A ploy that lets two of your fighters swap places anywhere on the board, so long as one is in a Cover Hex Chum the Waters– A two-glory Objective that scores in an End Phase if your opponent has one or more wounded Fighters on a feature token

Given that we’ve managed to do a playtest of every recent Underworlds release over the past year or so, it felt only natural that we continued the tradition within this review. So, my long-suffering partner and playtesting duo extraordinaire, Lizzie, took control of the Shadeborn whilst I took the Skaven (she’s giving up her Sunday afternoon for this; I wasn’t going to make her play with the rats). There is a lot, though. As I discovered when I played the Harrowdeep box, getting through my first game of Underworlds as a newcomer to the rules can feel like a bit of a slog. There’s still lots of stuff that needs to be done and an awful lot to remember when playing Underworlds, so even though the rulebook isn’t massive, there’s still a lot of information in it that will take some time to get to grips with. Each warband provides its own painting challenge, with a hatful of highly-detailed miniatures to get creative with. The Warhammer TV painting team has come up with a collection of paints for each warband to help you get them ready to enter the Gnarlwood. Nethermaze also introduces the new Map keyword – though as you might expect from an eldritch labyrinth, even the guidebooks are a gamble. Detailed Map Fragment, for example, allows you to find a shortcut to victory by gaining spent glory points – but beware! Your opponents are watching your every move, and can dip into their armoury in return.

The box is also a surprisingly good resource for brand-new players, in spite of the fact it isn’t pitched at them. In the past, these boxes have had a habit of being a little bit too rules- and jargon-heavy for completely new players to get their heads around (which is what made the Underworlds Starter Set such a good resource). But I have to say, following a read through of the rulebook and a look over the various cards and other bits and pieces in the box, there’s nothing in here that should turn newcomers off. Sure, it’s got a steeper learning curve to it than the Underworlds Starter Set, but it’s by no means an impossible mountain to climb. I used my part of the Power phase to upgrade one of my surviving fighters with Eshin Throwing Stars, which allowed me to work towards completing my Objective of damaging Lizzie’s fighters with Krowch’t and/or Skulk.

Next, we have to place the various gloom and objective hexes onto the map. We did this in the layout below. Shroud Queen Slythael takes this power one step further – being in a cover hex bathes her in shadow, allowing her to teleport to edge hexes and other secluded spots. Compared to the Warcry models, the Shadowborne don’t bring many new ideas, it’s really more of the same. Still, as a fan of anything with pointy ears I like the new models a lot. With only four models they are a nice little painting project, especially Slythael with her cloak and crystal weapons. Fun factor Nethermaze comes with a whole host of goodies to really pimp up your gaming experience. We’ll have a look at the gaming boards, the tokens, the cards and the dice that come in the box in this section. Game Boards Kixi-Taka the Diviner is blessed by his Slann masters, and makes use of esoteric Old One technology to lead the Starblood Stalkers into battle and usher along the Great Plan. Two skinks join forces with Otapatl the Chameleon Skink – and that taciturn mass of scale and muscle known as Klaq-Trok.
