Members of Unite, employed by housing charity Shelter, are celebrating victory after agreeing a vastly improved pay offer. The decision to accept the new deal means that the scheduled strike due to begin tomorrow (11 December) has been called off. Extended negotiations On the Pre-Sessional course Simon teaches postgraduate students who are just about to start studying at the University, helping them prepare for challenge of studying in a foreign culture. On the In-Sessional course, he supervises undergraduates, postgraduates and post-docs from all Cambridge departments and colleges, although he specialises in teaching scientists. He was also the main teacher on short academic English courses for visiting Chinese university students run by the China UK Development Council. Outside the Language Centre, he supervises undergraduates at Gonville and Caius College in academic skills. He had announced his departure from the Alzheimer's Society in September 2019, and in December 2019 the Society announced that Kate Lee from CLIC Sargent would become its next chief executive from April.

When not teaching and writing, he grows vegetables and fruit in his garden, goes on long country walks and plays Irish traditional music on the fiddle (though not all at the same time). When Clare is not teaching at the Language Centre, she is the director of two consultancies: Doris and Bertie, which trains people to write, and Broom & Moon, which helps organisations communicate their purpose, vision, strategy and values. Over the years, she has helped senior executives at a wide range of businesses and governmental organisations communicate their ideas engagingly and persuasively. She has also designed and delivered workshops on effective business communications at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge.Hopefully the improved pay offer will result in improved industrial relations at Shelter and we can build on this pay increase to end the low pay culture currently experienced by the charity’s staff.” Outside of work, Simon is a keen practitioner of yoga, which takes him around the UK and beyond, often on his fold up bicycle. He also taught for a year in Wuxi, China, preparing students for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of New England, Australia.She has been involved with ‘Researcher Development’ for many years now, designing and delivering workshops, both as part of the Centre for Personal and Professional Development and most recently at the Department of Engineering. The union said it has recently represented Samaritans staff who had been bullied by former members of its management team. Given the fact that the Samaritans is in the very early stages of recovering from a toxic bullying culture which has damaged the lives of many of its staff, Unite does not believe that Mr Hughes is the right person to heal the problems the charity has experienced.
Position:
As well as his ADTIS responsibilities, he currently teaches undergraduate translation for the Spanish and Russian Sections at Cambridge, as well as Spanish literature to undergraduates at Fitzwilliam. He gives occasional seminars on translation techniques at colleges in the university.
