About this deal

It also needs to be said that if you’ve not watched the Peaky Blinders TV show, much of the fan service that’s paid during Mastermind will just pass you by. This feels like a game made for fans, by fans and while a newcomer to the life of the Shelby’s could certainly enjoy the game play, the context around why it’s inspired would be totally lost on you. At least watch the first season of the show before playing this game. You’ll thank me for it. The visuals within Peaky Blinders: Mastermind are very nice, both the actual in-game graphics and the still image cutscenes. I would have prefered animated cutscenes or at least voiced ones with either the original cast or any other voice actors, but I still enjoyed it regardless – I even gave each character the voice I thought they would have within my video down below! The realistic yet slightly stylised visuals help create a game that looked very periodically correct and entertaining to explore.

Peaky Blinders: Mastermind - Metacritic

Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is developed by FuturLab and as the game’s name suggests, it’s a strategic puzzle adventure. Let’s be real, the majority of us fans would have envisioned a Peaky Blinders game going down a different genre path. However, it’s not the strangest avenue to peruse for the gangster drama. For people unfamiliar with the show, our protagonist, Thomas Shelby’s, main strengths rest in his mad smarts and wit. He’s able to strategize a multifaceted plan to get the upper hand in any situation. Therefore, a game in this direction has potential. On that account, I entered playing Peaky Blinders: Mastermind with a completely open mind. But that journey won't be easy. Knight has confirmed (via PeakyBlinders.tv) that Tommy's in a new emotional state going into series six. Laurence has won numerous awards in his journalism career, including the BSME Talent Award’s Best Deputy Editor, the PPA's 30 Under 30, and the New Editor and Editor of the Year at the AOP and BSMEs. He led Digital Spy to win PPA's Digital Content Team of the Year twice, along with the British Media Awards’ Brand of the Year in 2021. An inspired adaptation of the TV show, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a real treat for those who love the antics of the Shelby’s. The Finger Guns Review.

Have you played Desperados III, or read my review on it? If so, you’ll have seen/used the pre-planning mechanic where you take control of every character and act out a set of actions, then push a single button and watch as they all play out seamlessly. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is similar but it plays more like The Invisible Hours, a game in which you manipulate time to progress the story, only this time you’re creating the various timelines rather than simply watching them. The plot is a prequel to the first season of Peaky Blinders. A Peaky Blinder by the name of Scout is accused of having involvement around a suspicious murder, in an elaborate plot to bring down the Shelby Clan. It is now down to Tommy and his fellow family members to organize a plan to defend the Peaky Blinders name, and show the people of Birmingham why they are not to be messed with. Laurence has been a broadcasting contributor on television and radio, including KISS, Heat Radio, BBC Radio London, Radio 5 Live, and BBC Breakfast. He is also a visiting lecturer at various universities teaching journalism, including City, University of London, Nottingham Trent, Staffordshire University and London Metropolitan. As the game progresses you'll gain access to half a dozen characters with specific roles to fill, and the missions that you take on become more and more elaborate. The big problem with Mastermind is that the game ends just as it is becoming interesting from a gameplay perspective, and so while the last couple of levels do occasionally hit some high notes, they're the exception rather than the rule. A few issues aside, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a celebration of the TV sensation that translates much of what is loved about the show into tangible game play systems. The last third of this game is a brilliant showcase of the time manipulation mechanics and puzzle depth that can really push the player and offers oodles of tension. It’s simply a shame that it takes two thirds the game for that to be realised and for it to end so soon after it begins. 7/10

Tommy continued to hallucinate an apparition of Grace Shelby (Annabelle Wallis) throughout season five, so there's a strong chance she will appear again. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is launching on PS4 (reviewed on a standard PS4), Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on August 20th, 2020.

The gameplay is the embodiment of tactics and execution as it utilizes a reversing-in-time mechanic, regarding how you solve puzzles. I know, I don’t remember Tommy having time-travelling abilities either, but presumably, the rewind ability embodies the manifestation of Tommy playing out scenarios within his mind. I hope it’s that anyways… Speaking previously to Digital Spy about the relationship between Linda and Arthur, Kate said: "I definitely feel like there's a lot of unfinished business there. They share a child together. There's definitely no chance Arthur would let Linda get away with Billy, so they're tied together, with the family connection, and obviously family is a big connection in Peaky Blinders. The reversing-in-time mechanic is displayed at the bottom of the screen as a timeline. Where you can see how much time has passed, switch between characters and see symbols displayed on the timeline that represent each character’s actions. In a weird way, it reminded me of the old school program Windows Movie Maker with the way they displayed their timeline. It was bright and colourful and is reasonably easy to follow. In 2012, Sam made it to the final of the Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year competition, and went on to become a filmmaker himself, directing three features that have all played major festivals, and secured distribution – starring in two of them. His byline has appeared in outlets such as Yahoo, MTV, Dazed, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and Good Housekeeping among others.
