About this deal

I took care to ensure that the front element of the lens was clean, and clear of water droplets, but there’s flare in quite a few of my images when the sun is at 90-degrees to the lens. We've got no complaints with the P950's electronic viewfinder, though. This has been upgraded from the 0.2-inch, 921k-dot LCD EVF found in the P900, and the P950 gets a 0.39-inch, 2359k-dot OLED unit. The size and resolution increase makes the EVF genuinely useful in the P950, whereas you'd need to be a big fan of squinting to find the P900's EVF any use.

Nikon Coolpix P950 review - Digital Photography Review

In practical terms, you can shoot wide-angle views, similar to what the main lens on most smartphones captures, zoom in to bring distance subjects to view, or anywhere in between. There are some trade-offs made, with the sensor size being one, and the lens aperture another. It opens up to a very reasonable f/2.8, but it drops off as you zoom, eventually settling in at f/6.3. When it comes to performance, the P950 is a mixed bag. Aside from the versatility of the zoom range, easily my favorite features are the image stabilization (more on that in a moment) and the electronic viewfinder. Offering 2.3 million dots, the OLED finder is bright, contrasty, and a world away from the P900's EVF, which was prone to 'rainbow-tearing'. It's a really impressive upgrade, even if it is probably one of the main things that contributed to making the P950 more expensive than its predecessor. Image stabilization and autofocus Select [ Firmware version] in the [ Set up] menu and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update. The P950's rated 5.5EV of image stabilization (or Vibration Reduction, to use Nikon's parlance) is unchanged from the P900, and still very impressive. The first of Nikon's modern superzoom compacts that I can remember using was the P500 (2011) and the 'snaking' in the viewfinder at long focal lengths, caused by the VR system trying to keep the image stable was literally nauseating. There's still some of that with the P950, but on the whole, provided you're not trying to handhold the camera at 2000mm in a gale, the stabilization is excellent. It's actually possible to get sharp shots at shutter speeds as long as 1/50 sec at the extreme end of the telephoto range with some experimentation, which is remarkable. The downside of shooting Raw is that .NRW files eat up more card space and they take time (and a degree of expertise) to process. If you don't want the hassle, you can shoot JPEG and manually select white balance depending on your situation, from the usual range of presets, including daylight, cloudy and incandescent.

It gives a very nice, clear view of the scene and it’s especially useful in bright sunshine or when you’re trying to follow a moving subject. Run F-P950-V13W.exe to extract the firmware to a sub-folder in the new folder. The resulting file and folder hierarchy is shown below: As we saw before, images directly from the camera have an overall good impression of detail when you’re viewing them at normal web or printing sizes (A4 or below). It’s possible to see some evidence of image smoothing when viewing images at 100% at even reasonably low or mid-range ISOs, such as ISO 400, but it only becomes particularly apparent at normal viewing sizes from ISO 800 onwards. However, out of focus areas can look a bit smudged, so it depends upon where the focus point is in the scene.

In fact, from some angles, the P950 doesn’t look great deal smaller than the full-frame Nikon D780.

COOLPIX P950

What that means is that you get nicely vibrant images which show a good degree of realism. As we’d expect from a small sensor, the best results can be seen when shooting in good light. Battery life does not reflect the use of SnapBridge and may vary with the conditions of use, including temperature, the interval between shots, and the length of time that menus and images are displayed. Perfect for the photographer who wants to capture birds and other wildlife, the robust superzoom camera is an update to the Nikon Coolpix P900. The new model allows the photographer to capture distant subjects in extraordinary detail and with exceptional ease, thanks to the bright and fast NIKKOR lens with a wide f2.8 maximum aperture. With functions and capabilities similar to that seen on the P1000, the Nikon Coolpix P950 provides the photographer with a multitude of shooting options. Capture landscapes and scenic images right on through to super zoomed fast-moving birds and wildlife. At first glace you'd be forgiven for thinking the P950 was a DSLR camera, such is its bulk and exterior design. However, the camera and lens are a single fixed unit and cannot be separated. Though the P950 is slightly bigger than the P900 at 140.2 x 109.6 x 149.8mm, it's appreciably smaller the seriously hefty P1000, and also lighter at 1005g. But even this size and weight is still significantly more than a DSLR like Nikon's D5600 equipped with a 18-55mm kit lens.

Joining the viewfinder is a 921k-dot, 3.2-inch articulating screen, which has the same resolution as its predecessor, but is a little larger (3.2-inches, compared to 3.0). It seems odd that in 2020, a screen without touch-sensitivity has entered the market, and it’s a shame not to see this improvement compared with the older model. Still it’s useful that you can position the screen any which way you like, and is particularly handy for video recording and taking selfies. It’s also good to be able to turn the screen to face inwards to protect it when on the move. may be less important to you if you’re not often shooting videos, but it’s good to have it available for travel/holiday clips and family videos. Light seems bounce around inside the lens creating multiple hotspots and lowering contrast. On some occasions you can use it creatively, or reduce it by shading the lens with your hand, but at other times it ruins the image. The viewfinder is an OLED, one that's very sharp at 2.36 million dots. Nikon doesn't publish the magnification rating, but does state the display itself is about 0.39 inches in size. It's plenty large to my eye, delivering as much confidence in evaluating framing and exposure as I get with a midrange mirrorless camera. 57.1mm (320mm equivalent), f/6.3, 1/6-second, ISO 100 Connectivity and Power I assume you're referring to the gallery as a whole and not my 4K video which you replied to, as the D70 is incapable of 4K video, or even 4K stills. ;-)
