Summary: This book explains a science concept of natural selection and how animals evolve. It shows this in a way that readers can visualize the change that animals, or in this case moths, go through to adapt to the environment. The book at first hides the moth, and then it gets visible when the environment starts to change, which causes the moth to adapt. Ma/Tanisi was orphaned when young, and bought up by her Uncle on a houseboat in Kashmir where she learnt the Urdu she now teaches (both at University and to the sons of a well known local Muslim – both positions becoming increasingly untenable) and of which she, with her blue eyes, still dreams as well as remembering her infatuation with her Uncle which she seems to find echoed more in the father of her charges than in her husband. Tanisi and her Uncle are (I think) of the Pir Ali caste (which I think from some research is associated with the poet Tagore and seen as heretical by pure Brahmins). Summary: A moth's survival journey starts immediately after it is born. These moths with peppered wings rely on the trees surrounding them to stay hidden. This adaptation has always worked until buildings begin to go up and their surroundings begin to change. The moth's journey to survival continues in this new habitat, as the trees have become covered in soot. These moths learn how to adapt and flourish in this new land as the Industrial Revolution is booming. A trillion words, a million perspectives, over thousands of books, yet, nothing.... nothing braces you as the horrors washes anew with every account told, with every memory rehearsed from the partition era. Moths, like all insects, provide vital ecological services, including as food sources for other organisms. Their predators include birds, mammals and spiders. I won’t say this is by far the best partition literature that I have read, however I did enjoy this unique insight which encapsulated historical events and experiences flawlessly. There were a few instances where Hindi phrases were misprinted which I am willing to overlook as it was written by someone who is uninitiated to the language and they were far and few! Sexual assault, rape, violence, sexism, xenophobia, racism, gore, animal violence, incest, explicit sexual scenes.

If you are ready for something different, and/or if you are in the mood to give a friend a fabulous gift, grab a copy of The Moth. I promise that you will be glad you did. I would have given this book five stars if it weren't for one glaring flaw: the unnecessary use of "star power." Now, I understand that a lay person who has never heard of The Moth probably won't be enticed by this book at a bookstore until they read "Malcolm Gladwell" or "Darrell 'DMC' McDaniels" or another famous name on the cover. Unfortunately, just because they're famous doesn't mean they can write, and even if they're writers, that doesn't mean they can tell a short story. In my opinion, these "celebrity" authored pieces were the weakest in the collection. However, as a marketer myself, I understand the reasoning behind it--I just don't like it. This is a book about natural selection. The story starts off with a peppered moth awakening from its cocoon, followed by multiple other moths waking up too. There are two types of moth mentioned in the book: light peppered moths, and dark peppered moths. The dark peppered moths are as dark as charcoal. The story discusses how predators are searching for food, and end up eating the charcoal peppered moths but not the light peppered ones. The reason why is because the light peppered moths can camouflage into their environment and the charcoal peppered ones cannot. However, humans build coal plants and it ends up covering the forest with smoke and sod. This time, the charcoal peppered moths blend in better and the light peppered moths get eaten. The story discusses how the moths that are surviving are passing on their genes and traits therefore causing an increase in whatever type of moth is surviving. The sounds of muezzin that float across the city are soothing, the air is soft with the scent of jasmine and rose, and conversations are strewn with quotes from Tagore. At least, that’s how the first half of Moth reads. However, this is as much a story of the riving of naivety as it is about the loss of innocence, and partition’s agonies go abruptly from being a political tragedy, discussed over supper, to a source of intense personal anguish. The research is impeccable and the atmosphere she creates with her sense of time and the place will drag you right in and make you a part of the story; living and breathing with the characters. Alessandro Giusti, Lepidoptera Curator at the Museum, explains that brilliantly coloured moths are often day-flying species or those keen to display their distastefulness to predators. But Razak did not shy away from depicting the downside of a non-misogynistic patriarch during a time of widespread violence either. Complexity and nuance, yes please! This is but one example of many. There is an interview with Razak at telegraphindia.com in which she explains why she wrote this book and how she came to the book’s title: Moth by Melody Razak was published June 24th with Weidenfeld & Nicolson (W&N Books) with The Observer describing it as ‘powerful and heartbreaking.’ I finished reading Moth with a lump in my throat and my mind in turmoil. Bappu/Bhai is a rather timid dreamer - increasingly unable to reconcile his idealistic view of a tolerant household and society with the terrible sectarian hatred and violence around him. His one moment of bravery was went he went with bribes to rescue the house cook Dilchain from her in-laws after her abusive husband burnt himself to death trying to kill her – a rescue motivated partly by principle and partly by love of her cooking and which leads to some unrequired love for him from Dilchain (who as the higher caste family members lose their way in the horrors of partition increasingly leads the family from below).
