Notice what processes occur when you stop at the end of the lane, when you stand still, when you turn and begin walking again. For many people it is a fascinating discovery when they are able to have a pure, bare perception of physical objects such as lightness, tingling, cold and warmth. Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw held Burma’s highest scholastic honor, the title of Agga Mahapandita, awarded to him in 1952. During the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Rangoon from 1954 to 1956, he performed the duties of Questioner (pucchaka), a role performed at the First Buddhist Council by the Venerable Mahakassapa. Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw was also a member of the executive committee that was responsible, as the final authority, for the codification of all the texts edited at the Council.

OCD occurs across the world. There is substantial similarity across cultures in the gender distribution, age at onset, and comorbidity of OCD. Moreover, around the globe, there is a similar symptom structure involving cleaning, symmetry, hoarding, taboo thoughts, or fear of harm. However, regional variation in symptom expression exists, and cultural factors may shape the content of obsessions and compulsions. Energy-related bodily experiences resulting from stimulating the flow of qì also appear to result from the approach to vipassanā taught by S. N. Goenka, which involves executing a body scan. The basic instruction given by Goenka ( 1987/ 1997, p. 17), as part of the standard teaching of a 10-day course, is “to fix your attention in a certain area [of the body], and as soon as you feel a sensation, to move ahead.” Such a procedure would indeed stimulate the flow of qì in the part of the body that is being attended to. Goenka ( 1987/ 1997, p. 35) further explained that, on doing this repeatedly in the form of a body scan, it can be expected that “gross, solidified, unpleasant sensations begin to dissolve into subtle vibrations. One starts to experience a very pleasant flow of energy throughout the body.” Note that here the concept of “energy” comes up explicitly, although this seems to be simply a way of expressing the meditative experience in a way attuned to a contemporary audience, without being further pursued as an actual effect of the meditation practice.

It is only in the presence of three factors—effort, accuracy and mindfulness—that concentration develops. Steffens-Dhaussy, C. (2022b). The volume concludes with an appendix that examines why the Theravada came to be known as Vibhajjavada, “the doctrine of analysis.” Vipassana, or insight meditation, is the practice of continued close attention to sensation, through which one ultimately sees the true nature of existence. It is believed to be the form of meditation practice taught by the Buddha himself, and although the specific form of the practice may vary, it is the basis of all traditions of Buddhist meditation.Feinstein, D. Walking meditation develops balance and accuracy of awareness as well as durability of concentration. As we get closer and closer to this lifting process, we will see that it is like a line of ants crawling across the road. From afar the line may appear to be static, but from closer up it begins to shimmer and vibrate.
