About this deal

For a few projects now I’ve used a mix of Minwax stains to get a rough approximation of aged pine that isn’t too red or orange but a nice medium toned down brown. The formula is roughly 2:3 Provinicial and Ipswich Pine stains mixed together. It’s not as interesting as DIY home chemistry like melting steel wool in vinegar overnight or melting down your kids toys and mixing it with their tears, but it’s the most effective mix I’ve found. Ceruse—a white lead-based pigment—first made history in the 16th century as a cosmetic for European high society before it ever wound up on furniture. So when it was repurposed by craftsmen into a decorative finish for wood, the technique was dubbed cerused wood. The resulting weathered white finish muted the original color of the wood and emphasized the texture of its wood grain. Liming wax, often referred to as lime wax or white wax, is a specially formulated product that’s primarily used for enhancing the appearance of wood furniture and other wooden items. The main ingredient of this wood wax is a white pigment, which is why it’s sometimes called white wax . This pigmented wax, when applied to bare, grained timber, settles into the wood grain, accentuating its pattern and texture and giving it a beautiful, whitened effect that’s both distinct and stylish. As you can see from the photo below, I did a sloppy job on purpose, and left a lot of places with no paint where there were crevices. I want those areas to be dark so it looks very old.

How to lime wood to get that white wash effect | Real Homes

In this article, let’s learn more about liming as a finishing technique and how to use this technique to treat something like pinewood. What Is Liming Wax? The bottom drawer has two passes of Citristrip, the top two only had one. You can see I didn’t do a good job applying the stripper in a uniform direction on the top one and that made for more work, removing the swirls, later. Strip and/or stain light-colored wood. The classic white cerused wood finish isn’t noticeable when applied to bare, light-colored hardwoods like poplar or woods painted white or cream. If you want to ceruse light-colored bare hardwood, your best bet is to stain the wood first with a dark-colored wood stain. If you want to ceruse painted wood that’s currently a shade of white, use a wood stripper to strip the wood, then either ceruse the bare wood or stain the wood and then ceruse it. The second method is layering paint to bring out the grain pattern. For a high traffic piece such as this dining room table, I prefer this method because high traffic furniture needs a durable topcoat to fully protect it, and you can’t use wax under a polyurethane coat. This is the method that I detail below. Best Wood Types for CerusingPrior to applyinga limed finish, wood must be clean, dry and grease-free, and existing finishes completely removed. The next step is to wipe this clean. What I should have done, is wipe off the excess and then use clear wax to remove the liming wax from the flats and from the areas that didn’t need to be highlighted. Sadly what I did was rub in the liming wax and dry wipe away the excess. The results looked pretty great at first. Raising the grain is also a useful step when you want to stain pinewood and use liming wax with pine. This extra step will help the grains catch the liming wax better when the wax is applied, which will allow the natural grain to shine through the layer of liming wax. If you want to adjust the amount of White Wax anywhere, you can do this using Clear Chalk Paint® Wax – it acts almost like a magic eraser! Dip a lint-free cloth in your Clear Wax and then use it to rub off any White Wax where you don’t want it. Do this while the White Wax is still soft.

Liming wax has long been used as a finish on exposed wood. This method is especially useful when you want to improve the look of wood by lightening the grain. The result will highlight the grain while giving your timber a more uniform, aged appearance that can look quite expensive without much effort. So the very first thing you need to know for the project is what the base color you are looking for. I was going for an aged pine look with the liming wax adding even further age to the overall appearance. Starting off with raw pine, it looked anything but aged.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Using Liming Wax

As we have mentioned, liming wax works best on exposed, bare wood, which is why any wood that has been painted or sealed with varnish or other sealants won’t be able to benefit from liming wax. In these cases, you will often need to strip the existing finish to expose the wood, sand it down, and raise the grain before applying the liming wax. In addition to stain, liming wax is frequently applied to wooden floors and wall panels, offering a unique, whitewashed aesthetic that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room. This whitewash application not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also provides the floor with a water-resistant finish that helps to protect the wood from damage, making it a practical as well as a decorative choice. Liming wax can give pine furniture a wonderful antique finish that adds virtual years, interest and character to a piece of furniture. The look of imperfect white caught in the grain, creases, nooks and crannies of a piece is a distinct finish that really sets it apart from simpler, less dynamic finishes. Basically if you are looking at a super old piece of furniture that has white highlights and you are wondering if you should take out a second mortgage to buy this French antique piece or try to recreate it yourself, the answer is liming wax, that and no do not take out a second mortgage to buy French antiques.

If an area dries into a white cakey paste, reapply another thin layer of stripper to keep it wet. Don’t scrape it when it’s white, it’s a waste of time. Cerused oak is the most common species because it already has a strong grain pattern that shows easily. In fact, red oak doesn’t require any wire brushing or prep to get the look. White oak is also great, but the pores are smoother with a more subtle grain pattern. At this stage I can still play about with it, so I’m going to take a little bit of Clear Wax and maybe just try along the edge, and that will just take it… it’s like an eraser: it rubs it away. And it might just make it more apparent. I could just do the edge there and keep this bit whiter. If you have a piece of wood with a strong, visible grain to it – something like oak – you can really bring out this wood grain with liming wax. This isn’t a difficult technique to learn. You don’t need to bring out any paints – all you need is White Chalk Paint® Wax, a Wax Brush and a lint-free cloth. This technique utilizes paint to create the cerusing technique. It is different from using liming wax because the table can be sealed with a clear coat that is hard and durable. Step 1: Prep the wood surface
