About this deal

Local dimming is limited to 10 vertical zones. It's not very useful due to the low amount of zones so you will mostly notice it during game loading screens when it lights up sections of the display with small icons etc.

Resolution is ~1M pixels less than 4K 16:9. So you can look at 4K benchmarks and add a bit more frames on top of that to figure out roughly how your GPU is going to perform. It’s an exciting slate of specifications, and Samsung says that this panel can be used for work and play – so it should be versatile. Game HUD may go to the very edges of the screen. Makes for immersive visuals but difficult to read health etc displays. On some games like Witcher 3 it stays in the center as if the game was running at a 16:9 resolution.Max refresh rate is 100 Hz. Goes down to 60 Hz if one of the computers doesn't support 100 Hz refresh rate. Refresh rate, response time, low input lag, screen size and screen adjustment options are disabled if Freesync is turned on. HDR does better or worse on a per game basis. Works about as well as any edge lit 4K TV for movies and videos.

Elsewhere, the Samsung CRG90 uses a VA screen, just like the Asus XG49VQ. And, just like the Asus, Samsung’s panel has a 4ms response time – fine for mainstream gaming, but not good enough for esports. The Asus’s vast contrast means that it’s a little bolder and brighter than the Samsung, although it can look a little too intense. Samsung’s panel doesn’t reach those levels, but it still has fantastic contrast – and its better colours mean that its images look a little more realistic. And both screens are superb when placed in the market; when it comes to colours and contrast, they’re better than the vast majority of other gaming panels. Can be turned on/off in the menu or per preset. Standard Engine = 70-120 Hz Freesync range, Ultimate Engine = 48-120 Hz Freesync range.

In other screen modes the Asus’s contrast level dropped down to a more conventional 1500:1, though, while the Samsung maintained its levels across more of its screen modes. You can use Information menu as a rudimentary framerate counter if Freesync is enabled as it will show the current refresh rate. Note that if LFC is in play it will show double the refresh rate. However, if you have a the cash and feel like you would benefit from a 32:9 widescreen, the Samsung CRG90 is the best widescreen monitor out there right now, thanks to its image quality, HDR abilities and all-round strong design. Verdict The stand can be a little bit wobbly and this can sometimes be noticeable when typing on a keyboard.

This compromise is caused by DisplayPort 1.4 – there’s just not enough bandwidth. It won’t affect the vast majority of users, but it’s something worth mentioning. Similarly, HDR and FreeSync aren’t available in picture-by-picture mode, but that’s a peripheral concern. The Samsung’s contrast and colour results remained consistent with the brightness toned down to a more usable 150 nits and with it ramped up to its peak level of 535 nits. HDR needs to be turned on in Windows display settings, some games may be able to turn it on without the Windows option. Another alternative is to use display presets where one is set to 100 Hz without Freesync enabled. Going from Freesync to non-Freesync preset seems to turn HDR on. Third alternative is to use HDRSwitch app which will turn on HDR as long the app is running. No built-in KVM support. You can use a separate KVM switch or software KVM solutions like Barrier, ShareMouse or Synergy for this.Unlike the CHG90, the CRG9 does NOT come with a keyboard/mouse switch. You need to use apps like ShareMouse, Barrier or Synergy or alternatively buy a KM switch for a hardware solution. The display might make some noise on the right side. I am not quite sure what causes this because it doesn't occur all the time. It sounds similar to the fizz of a soda drink.
