In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. Haunted, the story of a sceptical paranormal investigator taunted by malicious ghosts, began life as a screenplay [13] for the BBC, though this was not the screenplay used in the eventual film version. Its sequels were The Ghosts of Sleath and Ash. [14] Others of Herbert's books, such as Moon, Sepulchre and Portent, are structured as thrillers and include espionage and detective story elements along with the supernatural.

I went so long between my last James Herbert book and this one that I had forgotten how much I loved his work. This book is nothing like James Herbets normal style. This book is absolutely wonderful! In this tale we meet fluke! Fluke is a tiny puppy fresh into the world, but he's not like an ordinary puppy he's different. We then follow Fluke on his vast adventures and find out just what fluke is and why he was a puppy, and along the way we meet some really amazing characters as well as some really nutty ones too. a b Weber, Bruce (24 March 2013). This book was a real departure from other James Herbert books which are known for as being horrors, written in a gruesome style. The whole story is an adventure written from the perspective of a dog. Herbert captures the world at ground level, as seen through a dog's eyes (and nose) in such a compelling fashion that I actually found myself believing that it was a first account, accurate portrayal of canine thoughts and feelings - when finishing this book, I genuinely looked at my dog in a different way! However, with the barrage of unwanted publicity that followed, Childes found that he could no longer continue with his marriage, even for the sake of their young daughter Gabriel, and eventually fled to the Channel Islands to start up a new life for himself. a b Plint, Alec (21 March 2013). Expect harsh and no-holds-barred violence and /or repellent horror and gore when it gets the chance. There’s insanity afoot and what Herbert is going to produce from this fertile ground is drenched in the kind of dark and twisted horror that has been an absolute key to much of his prior work. Dun dun! The whole thing sounds like that, like the voiceover for the trailer for a shitty movie. But it gets so much worse! Brace yourself, because I have a sex scene for you: From the title and the cover art I had assumed that it was going to be a werewolf tale. But, I was wrong. There are no werewolves in the novel whatsoever. There is a mysterious killer however. Anyway, I am not going to delve in the story in detail. In brief the major events of the novel take place in the island of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel near the French coast. The island really exists.Jon Childes has found a peaceful life. He lives on one of the Channel Islands, working at three different schools teaching computer science. His ex-wife and daughter live in England, but he’s found a new relationship with a fellow teacher, Amy Sebire. He hopes the horror from his past is gone forever. The plot itself was pretty intriguing to me. I know of films and books to go down similar routes but I believe this is the first time I personally have ever read a story where our protagonist is a man trapped inside of a dog's body.
