About this deal

The comms hub uses the Wide Area Network (WAN) to talk to the company responsible for collecting the data and passing it on to other businesses such as suppliers; for the latest SMETS 2 meters this company will be the DCC (Data Communications Company) which the government has set up especially for this role. With the need for action on energy consumption and decarbonisation more important than ever, the hope is that services like SmartThings Energy can help galvanise consumer interest in smart meters by empowering users to take action based on their energy usage data more easily. Chameleon’s technology enables smart meter data to be securely and privately populated in the SmartThings app. Making this data easily accessible to consumers will allow them to make meaningful changes surrounding energy in the home and ultimately may contribute to a lower carbon footprint. Chameleon Technology furthers its commitment to empowering individuals to make smarter energy choices

Oh dear! Earlier I wrote “ After one hour, I can’t praise this highly enough and hope my mind isn’t changed during the forthcoming hours, days and weeks. Highly recommended . “The communications hub or comms hub sitting immediately onto top of your electricity meter is responsible for receiving and sending all data. This data can be meter readings, commands, or alerts.

If the big selling point of smart meters to consumers is that with the IHD, they can see their usage, real times costs etc and hopefully reduce their usage ... wouldn't it be logical in the event of a failure to replace the IHD free of charge? By helping households be more aware of their energy consumption and encourage positive behaviours to reduce energy usage, SmartThings Energy offers a category-defining energy saving service for everyone, irrespective of who their energy provider is.” Live data, coming soon, will drive benefits of SmartThings Energy even further Low / Medium / High Indicators - The IHD compares your current consumption with a recent period (usually the previous week) or the budget you have set, and shows red (high), amber (medium) or green (low) indicators. Every few seconds the electricity meter sends data to the communication hub over the Intimate Communications Hub Interface. It’s been less than 12 months since I had the IHD OR I’ve never had one at all, what’s my best option? If it’s been more than 12 months, the warranty will have expired and I’m afraid you will no longer qualify for a free replacement. You may still have options anyway though, which are detailed further down. Your supplier may also be willing to send a replacement for a small fee so it’s worth asking anyway. Before trying that though, it’s worth seeing if you can self-recover. :) Four hours in, I finally get to play with the device properly, but unfortunately this was short lived and I’ll explain why further down. The short version is that from my hour or two of using the ivie Bud, it was ultimately no different to the IHD6 other than having a built-in temperature sensor and no battery. If you already know how the IHD6 works, then you know how the ivie Bud works. Its advantages over the Bright app are that its real or near real time whereas Bright app isn't and, in my experience, reports data from up to several hours ago even when refreshed multiple times. Bright is useful for historic data and graphs but I actually find Guy Lipmans program more useful for the same purpose. Energy bills have increased and we're all on the hunt for easy solutions to keep prices as low as possible. Could smart devices and energy-saving gadgets help? So many devices are sold as "energy-saving" these days, but are they worth it? Which ones are actually worth buying? UK Fuel Mix disclosure information published by Government Department DESNZ (PDF, 173 KB), recognises electricity from wind, solar and nuclear fuel produces zero carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation. https://chameleontechnology.co.uk/2021/10/18/samsung-launches-smartthings-energy-powered-by-chameleon-technology/ As an alternative to all these options, most suppliers allow you to review your smart meter usage data in your online account and app. If you don’t mind not having live data, this may be a potential option. The NCSC also enforces a rule as part of the specifications that there cannot be any way to hook up anything to a Smart Meter locally outside of the ZigBee HAN. Even the Comms Hub uses a “wired” connection to the electric meter for power only, data is still sent between them over the HAN. I don’t have that trouble (yet) My Bud is situated next to my broadband hub and about 3-4 metres from the meters situated in the garage below and with a concrete floor/ceiling in between! I’m not sure it’s vital to have them near the meters as the connection is wi-fi. For me though, the biggest let down relates primarily to the fact that the ivie Bud feels too much like a watered down Chameleon IHD6 with little else thrown in. Chances are that won’t be a problem for most people, but for me, when I’ve already got two full-fat IHD6, I really don’t want a watered down one as it’s a major downgrade over the Kecleon Brothers.
