( November 2022) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) Their armour is often depicted as flexible and resistant to bullets, but can be penetrated by gold arrows and projectiles made of gold. The Cybus Cybermen are bullet-proof and are very resilient, but are not indestructible – they are vulnerable to high explosives, electromagnetic pulses, specialised weaponry and Dalek weapons. Cybermen affected by the Cerebration Mentor, an emotion-enhancing device, went "mad". ( TV: The Invasion)It is a strange sight to see the second generation of Cybermen costumes in full colour in the 1970s, given that a third generation had been introduced before the end of the 60s. The narrow heads which featured on three occasions with Troughton are particularly distinctive. The Cyberships leftover from the invasion were examined and exploited by humans, allowing them to make advances in space travel, leading Sarah Jane Smith to describe the return of Mondas as "both the greatest disaster and most astonishing blessing ever to have happened to the human race." ( PROSE: The Power of the Daleks) In 1609, the Cybermen were invited to the Armageddon Convention, but they destroyed the robot messengers who sent the invitations. ( PROSE: The Empire of Glass) The Cybermen have seen many redesigns and costume changes over Doctor Who 's long run, as well as a number of varying origin stories. In their first appearance, The Tenth Planet (1966), they are humans from Earth's nearly identical "twin planet" of Mondas who upgraded themselves into cyborgs in a bid for self-preservation. Forty years later, the two-part story, " Rise of the Cybermen" and " The Age of Steel" (2006), depicted Cybermen invented again in a parallel universe London as a business corporation's attempt at upgrading humanity. Doctor Who audio dramas, novels, and comic books have also elaborated on existing origin stories or presented alternatives. The 2017 episode, " The Doctor Falls", explains the different origins as parallel evolution, due to the inevitability of humans and human-like species attempting to upgrade themselves through technology; this perspective resolves continuity differences in the Cybermen's history.

When I mentioned this curious Cyberman to my fellow researcher Jon Green, he came up with something else of interest which I'd forgotten. Although it wasn't necessarily directly connected, it was clearly part of the same story of these dormant costumes. Reference was made to "Cyber-Wars" occurring by the mid- 23rd century, having left Earth financially destroyed in combination with the 22nd century Dalek invasion. ( PROSE: Theatre of War) One account held that the first Cyber-War began in the 2260s, when human colony worlds like Burnt Salt had their populations ravaged by mass conversions. ( AUDIO: The Tyrants of Logic) Another example of the influence of the Radio Times photos is the Cyberman card which came with Weetabix breakfast cereal, pictured right. Once again it isn't the Revenge type, it is the 1973 hybrid, right down to the straps over the shoulders which held the chest unit on. The artist must have used another 1960s image for reference, since the Cyberman is drawn with a gun slotted into the chest unit as per The Moonbase. Weetabix also created a Dalek card featuring none other than the Radio Times "Red Top"! The fourth model of cybermat appears for the first time in the revived series in the 2011 episode " Closing Time", where it is shown to have an organic mouth full of sharp teeth, and transmits power to a crashed cyber-ship.

Early Mondasian Cybermen had a quavering voice which put inflected syllables in a seemingly random, sing-song manner. Their suits were not entirely metallic, the face and hands being instead covered in a sort of hardened medical gauze. ( TV: The Tenth Planet) Those on the colony ship, like Bill Potts, spoke like this as well. ( TV: The Doctor Falls) The Time of the Doctor" introduced a unique prototype Cyberman that was made of wood to avoid detection by the Church of the Papal Mainframe and equipped with blowtorches.

Carvings detailing the history of Mondas show the transition into Cybermen. ( COMIC: The Dead Heart) An upgraded form of cybermats appeared in " Nightmare in Silver". They were incredibly small mechanical insects that were more versatile and were able to partially convert other lifeforms into Cybermen. They were referred to as cybermites.

The Mondasian Cybermen from The Tenth Planet were updated for the Series 10 Finale. As opposed to shooting from their chest pieces they used their lanterns as weapons. This was in the Novelisation for The Tenth Planet. They also had the ability to emit electricity.
