About this deal

Correct answers will reveal the word cards as being agents, whilst incorrect answers can either result in the discovery of an innocent bystander - which simply forces the current group to stop guessing using their clue - or an assassin, causing the game to immediately end and all the players to lose. Should players successfully guess all their agent cards then they win the game. Anderson, Nate (2015-11-14). "Ars Cardboard: Codenames, the secret agent party game you've been seeking". Ars Technica . Retrieved 2022-03-24.

Place the key card in the plastic stand so that each player sees only one side of the card. The card should be wider than it is tall, as shown above. Either wide edge can be on top. Leonardo da Vinci, IRS, New South Wales, Boxing Day, The Lord of the Rings, moth-eaten, and guinea pig might all be good clues, but they break the rule that a clue must be one word. Your partner was actually giving a clue for NAPOLEON and RIFLE. But RUSSIA was also green on her side of the card, so it counts as a correct guess. She is not supposed to give any of this information away, so she acts as though RUSSIA was exactly the word she meant). Each turn you have to give your partner a two-part clue, one word and one number. The word should be a link between words on the grid that are agents, while the number is the number of words that need to be guessed. Your partner then guesses as many words as they like one by one, if they guess an agent you cover the word with a green agent card and may continue guessing. If it’s an assassin, the game ends as a loss. Any side can be up. Don't think about it. Just slide it into the stand. And don't let the field operatives see it. It is legal to give a clue for zero. For example, if you want your partner to guess ELEPHANT, ANT, and MOSQUITO while avoiding the assassin SLOTH, you can give a clue like lazy: 0. This will indicate that your partner should avoid SLOTH, and your partner might even be able to see that SLOTH is getting in the way of an easy clue like animals: 3.

Fast forward a few years and one of our fans sent me a copy of Codenames (the original, not Duet, I’ll get to that in a moment). This was done after hearing me tell the above story. They pointed out that I must have played with the wrong group of people and that the real fun in Codenames was trying to connect as many words as possible with each clue. So, I gave the game another shot. Your partner might see it as a green agent, in which case your partner covers it with a green agent card. The timer token should be put on top of the agent card to remind you of what happened on the earlier turn. But there are also words spymasters want teammates to dodge. Players want to avoid guessing the other team’s words because it earns points for the enemy (and immediately ends the turn). There are also neutral beige cards called “innocent bystanders,” which don't end the game, but put a team at a disadvantage when guessed, as their turn ends. If a player is thinking too long, any player can flip the sand timer and ask the slow player to make a decision before time runs out. Running into an innocent bystander ends the turn immediately, and running into an assassin ends the game. On the other hand, finding a green word gives your partner a chance for another guess. One Clue, Multiple Guesses

Codenames is a game played by 4 or more players in which players are split into two teams, red and blue, and guess words based on clues from their teammates. [2] One player from each team becomes the spymaster, while the others play as field operatives. [3] The end goal is to place all of the team’s agent tiles. Your team is ready for more challenging missions. Take one of the mission maps from the pad. (There are multiple copies, so you can play missions with various teams). Write your names in the Team box and then mark the circle labeled Prague. You have just completed the Prague 9-9 mission! If your partner touches a word you see as tan, mark it with a timer token. Take a token from the time bank and place it on the word card, bystander side up, with the arrow pointing from you to your partner. The innocent bystander cards and the assassin should be kept in between, where both spymasters can reach them easily. Then the guesser should guess as though the clue were valid. (So the turn ends in the usual way, which in most cases will use up another timer token). In some circumstances, an invalid clue might give away so much information that you decide it's better to start over with a clean game, but most of the time this penalty should be sufficient.

Codenames: Pictures was released in September 2016, and includes 200 two-sided cards that feature images instead of words. [2] The game uses a 5x4 grid instead of the original's 5x5, resulting in 20 cards being used at a time, but otherwise has the same rules as the original. The image cards themselves can also be combined with the word cards from the original game for a more advanced gameplay variation.Spymasters take turns giving clues. Each turn covers up at least one word, which makes guessing progressively easier. Each game has one key that reveals the secret identities of the cards on the table. The spymasters should choose the key card randomly and slide it into the stand between them.
