About this deal

There are three situations when chamois cream is particularly useful: for very long rides; for indoor training, where you're on the saddle almost all the time; and for returning to cycling after a few weeks off.

As well as lubricants, many chamois creams contain anti-bacterial and anti-fungal ingredients to help keep you problem-free down there. Premax Chamois Cream for Women is similar to the men's version in its price and fancy looks but formulated with ingredients for women's skin to balance pH and aid moisture while smelling good. It's long-lasting, feels amazing and delivers a very pleasant experience. You may notice chamois come in all different shapes and sizes depending on the rider's individual needs. However, the original chamois within cycling shorts for men (and cycling shorts for women, once the industry saw fit to manufacture them) were actually made of leather from a chamois goat, not the antibacterial synthetics you see fitted today. If you’re tired of the burning sensation, but not ready to give up on your activities, you might want to consider using chamois cream in those tender, and often targeted, areas.

The directions usually say to “apply generously.” But I’ve found in most cases you will only need a thin layer to do the job. In general however, roughly around one scoop using two fingers (a highly accurate measurement) should be enough to cover most friction prone areas. But this will largely be a trial and error process, as everyone's needs of course differ. Where do you apply chamois cream? While this will create a great barrier and lubricant to reduce friction, it doesn't have any antibacterial properties to keep bacteria at bay and doesn't let your skin sweat, so it may cause more problems than it solves.

For hygiene reasons, don’t ‘double dip’ by taking another scoop with the hand you’ve used to rub in the cream. You know those terrible padded shorts that serious cyclists wear? That’s not even the worst of their problems. Cyclists wear chamois (the bike shorts with a cushy little pillow sewn in the crotch area) to relieve the pressure of resting so much body weight on a thin bike seat. All this pressure around the underbutt crease also has some frictional effects on the skin. Things can go south. If you’d like a category of horrifying images to avoid Google-imaging, I can recommend “saddle sores,” which are a severe irritation in the butt region, prompted by sitting on a bike seat for too long. When I started biking a lot and far, I was so frightful of saddle sores that I took the recommended wisdom like it was law: use chamois butt’r. These days you don’t technically need any sort of chamois butter since a synthetic chamois will remain soft and pliable on its own. Do my shorts have a real or synthetic chamois? Questioning my faith about chamois butt’r was the best thing I’ve ever done for chamois butt’r, because it’s not just very good at one thing — it’s very good at many things. Protecting under-butt skin during long bike rides is a very specific mission, a mission that the butt’r accomplished so capably that I’d failed to consider its other possibilities until this summer.

Things to know about chamois cream

But a true chamois cream is going to be formulated so that it won’t damage or discolor technical clothing. Another alternative to expensive brands is that you can make your own homemade chamois cream! What else should I know? To some people, yes. To others, chamois butter is a waste of time and money. It is all about personal preference. If you have the perfect saddle, positioning, and shorts, working in harmony with your body, chamois butter is probably not necessary. (But how often does that happen?) Sudocream will have some barrier protection, as many parents will testify when helping babies with diaper/ nappy rash, but it's not as lubricating to ward off chaffing that can occur with an endurance ride.

We've recommended the 'standard' formula, which doesn't come with any promises of cooling. The brand does offer a 'Euro Style' formula, which adds in Witch Hazel and Menthol, thus giving that freshening effect which is so 'marmite' among riders. Chamois cream will usually also have anti-bacterial properties which may help prevent saddle sores developing or getting severe. Should you always use chamois cream? I have used several chamois creams from lesser-known brands (Morgan Blue, Force). However, after testing Chamois Butt’r Coconut, I have to admit that the difference is striking. Menthol produces a bizarre cold sensation in your nether regions once applied. But nonetheless, it can be a great added ingredient for chamois cream thanks to its numbing properties, therefore helping to relieve any soreness and pain that you may be experiencing in the saddle. You should know that trying some chamois butter is a great idea. I went without it for years, but once I tried it, I started to use it almost all the time. A ride substantially longer than usual do is similar. Your undercarriage may be toughened up for 50- or 60-mile rides and you may have done enough training you’re confident of completing a century, but the extra distance can make you sore enough that the last few miles are no fun at all. Chamois cream to the rescue, preventing a sore bottom. Another important thing to consider is the container your chamois cream comes in. This is mainly due to hygiene reasons: pots are a useful shape but bottled/tubed chamois cream that can be squeezed out rather than dipped into are better for preventing double dipping and therefore contamination. This should help them reduce friction between your bib shorts, skin and saddle for longer before washing away. Men’s vs women’s chamois cream This method of application can still be a great one to try. However, many people opt for applying directly to the problem areas once they have their kit on.

I would say that a good chamois cream increases your comfort by 2 levels. Don’t expect it will resolve all your bike fit issues. Comfort level before and after applying Chamois Butt’r Coconut Dip your fingers into the chamois cream and scoop out about three fingers worth of cream (about a quarter-sized amount). The aim of chamois cream is to reduce the friction or chaffing between your cycling shorts and your skin. I like to think in terms of value rather than price. If the chamois cream helps me avoid chafing, it’s probably worth whatever the price tag says! Is there any sort of cheaper alternative? The liner in cycling shorts is these days made from a sandwich of very clever foams and synthetic fabrics, designed to sit against your skin and keep you comfortable. The outer layer in particular is designed not to chafe your skin and to move with you as you pedal. Crotch Guard's maker says that the oils in its product mimic the molecular structure of the lipids (fats, to you and me) found in human skin and therefore strengthen and reinforce the structure of the skin. Traditional chamois creams usually provide a protective barrier to guard the skin from rubbing against other surfaces, but these can clog pores, promote ingrown hairs and stain clothing. Crotch Guard says that its oil supports the physiology of the skin's natural lipids so it is recognised and accepted by the human body, which then absorbs it to help support the skin's natural barrier and protective functions. The big revelation wasn’t just that Chamois Butt’r is suitable for more places than the rear, but also that it wasn’t only for exercise-induced skin flare-ups. I have city girl problems too! General summer grooming issues! Random tantrums of the epidermis. Bag Balm can be very soothing post-ride (especially if you forgot to apply chamois cream). It’s ideal for irritated skin.
