About this deal

The jellyfish demon in the Rhône. It's a gelatinous mass of something armed with many stinging tentacles that can form its own minions by severing the heads of the dead. It's also implied to be sentient to a degree, as it expresses fear of being punished by its master should it fail its task. There’s a definite feeling of escalation throughout Between Two Fires, and the dangers that Thomas and the girl encounter on their pilgrimage are perhaps the best representation. When they set out, danger comes in the form of bandits and brigands. Men like Thomas. Thomas channels his inner Geralt of Rivia shortly into their journey and partakes in same monster-slaying, and the threat just grows and grows from various forms of undead, to angels and demons warring in the skies, to an absolute abomination composed of massed together human limbs. It’s in his ability to so vividly describe these demonic horrors that Buehlman shines. I’ve never been a particular fan of novels categorized as straight-up horror, but when historical fiction, science fiction, or fantasy comes along with a horror element along the vein of the vomit zombies from the Expanse series and now basically anything in Between Two Fires, I absolutely love it.

Good Counterpart: Thomas' companions at the end of the book serve as a positive reflection to the people he was traveling with at the beginning. Rather than bandits, they're farmers. One of them is referred to as the "portly one" in contrast to the more sinister " fat one." And when they are approached by Delphine, their immediate response is to share food with her and take her with them without any intention to rape her at all. I wanted more tension at the end. The book is building and building for a final showdown of good vs evil and it didn’t deliver as much “epicness” as I would have liked. Thomas is a bitter man. His title, his home, his wife, were taken from him by no fault of his own and he is excommunicated by a corrupt system. He has taken to banditry and has earned the damnation fostered upon him. But within him, the spark of conscience rings true and he rescues a mysterious girl from his own lecherous companions. The two set off on an odyssey through the grim lands of France. He is the author of several novels, which range in setting from 14th century France to 1930s American South to modern-day New York. Oh, but don’t stop there. Let’s bring in the supernatural. And not in a typical fantasy type of way, with dragons soaring overhead, or sorcery being tossed about, but more in a lurking, terrifying, perhaps rip you asunder, you don’t know what the hell just hit you (or them) kind of way. And then beyond the gore, there is also the daunting presence of something else, some otherworldly beings dipping their hand into the works, trying to control the affairs of men to serve who knows what hidden agenda. This book is creepy. This book is violent. This book is FREAKIN FANTASTIC! And no, not just because it is creepy and violent. It’s how the characters and the setting and the creepy parts all worked together. It just seemed to find an excellent balance. This is also not a book for the faint of heart. We all have different tastes, so I won't go into details. All I can say is Christopher Buehlman really knows how to pull you in! Since I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters in the beginning, it was the superb storytelling that kept me reading. And that, in the end, is everything. Between Two Fires is simply an incredible novel and I cannot recommend it enough. Grades:

Heroic Bastard: Thomas's father wasn't married to his mother. His wife pointed out to him that he's almost certainly the Comte de Givras's son, but the Comte never said anything. Stupid Evil: Some of the lesser demons the trio encounter fail to serve as competent arbiters of temptation because they make their evil natures too obvious. Of special note is the group of supposed crusaders who offer to let Thomas accompany them to Avignon at the cost of leaving his companions behind. The slightest amount of hesitation is enough to turn them hostile. It happens offscreen, but it's evident Thomas had no problems when he fought and killed both Godefroy and the fat brigand in the barn, despite being outnumbered.

This book provides examples of:

road trip από το Α στο Ω, λίγο σαν τα Canterbury Tales του Chaucer. Then Let Me Be Evil: Thomas turned to brigandry as a result of being excommunicated purely so that a rival could seize his lands and holdings. The way he saw it, since this act robbed him of everything he had, doomed him to Hell, and God by all appearances allowed it to happen, then he would earn his damnation by working with thieves, murderers, and rapists just to make his quest for revenge against the man who wronged him. Okay, she asks the men to help her bury her father and during an interesting turn of events, the girl winds up alone with Thomas who she credits for saving her life and sparing her from being violated, but like I said, he is a disgraced knight and he is pretty broken down; his countenance and self-worth is very low. The dialogue between Thomas and the girl won me over immediately. It's funny, heartwarming, endearing...it is here, in the first few chapters, I fell head over heels in love with Thomas the Knight. He is now a forever favorite character who lives in my reader's heart. For me, this story is really about him. Jason Golomb (19 Jan 2016). Between Two Fires | CHRISTOPHER BUEHLMAN

Devil, but No God: The sections describing the war in heaven indicate that again and again the demons make headway on Earth while "God gave no answer". Until the very end, anyway. A lifelong fan of renaissance festivals, Buehlman developed an act called “Christophe the Insultor,” [3] roasting fair-goers for money at the behest of their friends, and has been touring with this act for 25 years. Early in his career the material was period and PG-13, performed in the lanes, but as the act moved on stage and into festival taverns it got bluer, more modern, and wilder, and has a strong cult following—most of his 18,000 Facebook followers have personally seen his show. He has also written and performed a one-man show about Christopher Marlowe, written a festival stage show called The Bastard Monks, and still performs his shows Filthy Irish Stories and Fat Shakespeare for the Sterling Renaissance Festival in the summer. Okay first off advice I've given before...DON'T GET YOUR THEOLOGY FROM FANTASY NOVELS. Now, that said, there are some good lessons here. For non-Christians this will obviously not be an issue. For Christians what you'll find here is a profound misunderstanding or maybe more likely a profound disregard of actual Christian theology. However I don't think the story itself will be a problem for most Christians. I'm a Christian (an actual practicing one) and I like the book...not the language but the book. On the up side the book actually brings up some interesting questions for thought and maybe discussion.

Doom Magnet: As more and more of Delphine's strange nature comes to the fore, the harder the fallen angels try to eliminate her, leading them to send servants to try and kill her outright or manipulate her two companions into doing it for them. Creepshow": Horror Novelist Christopher Buehlman Pens "The Man in the Suitcase" Episode". IMDb . Retrieved 2019-05-17. Foreshadowing: Before participating in the night tourney, the armorers refuse to touch Thomas' sword because of something it's covered in. Thomas believes they're repulsed by the blood of the eel monster he slew recently, but this ends up making little sense when one realizes that the denizens of the castle are minions of the Fallen Angel. It's later revealed that the thing that repulsed them was not the blood of the demon on the sword, but the blood of Delphine when she accidentally cut herself and bled on it. I thought some of the dream sequences were a bit confusing and I wondered at times where this sequence was really taking me. Possibly the jellyfish demon in the Rhône's offspring as well, as they each form around the severed head of a corpse.
