About this deal

Aerate your soil: Aerate your soil to help improve drainage and will allow air and water to penetrate the soil. Ample paths and stepping stones are usually required where lawns are laid on clay soils to avoid trampling wet clay soils and damaging them Miracle-Gro’s multi-purpose grass seed is another fast-germinating option for both overseeding a damaged lawn, or starting off a new one. Providing you get the conditions right, that is. Under perfect conditions such as a lot of sunlight, but not overly hot temperatures, and plenty of rain, grass seed can take between one and three weeks to germinate. If conditions are not as perfect as you’d like, and they often aren’t, you will probably have to wait longer to see results. We all know how much dogs love grass, and rolling on it after a bath, so having a tough type like ryegrass will prevent patches for when fido inevitably does this:

Lily Anderson is a writer at Bauer Media, where she tests products for titles such as Heat, Closer, What’s the Best and Mother&BabyNo matter what type of grass you choose, planting grass in clay soil can be a great way to create a lush and healthy lawn that will be the envy of your neighbors. With some careful planning, proper maintenance, and a little patience, you can transform your clay soil into a thriving landscape that you can enjoy for years to come. The Advantages of Choosing Native Grasses for Your Lawn Where this seed sort of falls a bit short is in shaded areas, and we saw a noticeable difference in how well the grass grew in the light compared to the patches in shadow. This isn’t exactly surprising, but something to keep in mind if you have a lot of shaded spots in your garden. The first consideration is what you use your lawn for. Whilst a 100% Fescue mix makes an excellent ornamental lawn, it’s not really practical for a lived-in garden. For example, it shouldn’t be played on because it’s not hard wearing enough.

Clay particles are amazingly dominant in a soil. This is explained by the relative size of the different particles (clay, sand and silt) that soil contains. Clay particles are very small but, because this allows more particles to fitin any givenspace (say 1cm cubed), they have huge surface areathat dominates the physical properties of soil. In comparison, sand and silt particles arelarger, so fewer particles are neededto fill a space(say 1cm cubed again). As a result, the overallsurface area of sand and silt is smaller andso much less influential on determining the characteristics of a soil than the clay particles. With GBW grass seed, that’s exactly what you get. The dwarf amenity ryegrass gives you an overall tough base that can handle shade and bad weather, and give weeds a hard time too. Red fescue and chewings fescue seeds are in there to help get those roots established, spread to bare patches, and cope with drought. Then there’s the brown top bent that will provide the softness and colour of a bowling green. Mowing height: Fine ornamental grass can and should be mowed quite close – as low as 1cm. Coarse ryegrass performs better if you let it grow a little more – up to 4cm. That said, any type of newly-sown grass should be left to grow up to around 7cm before you cut it for the first time. Trees, shrubs (especially roses), climbers and many bulbs are easier to grow on clay soils than plants that require frequent sowing, planting or dividing; annuals or bedding plants, for example All Purpose Seed Our all purpose range of grass seed is great value, and very versatile. We have several mixtures that you can buy by the kilogram, as well as our bulk discounted universal lawn. As mentioned above, it’s better to use organic feeds on clay soils. And during the height of the Summer, it’s also recommended to use a liquid feed rather than a granular one. So, liquid seaweed lawn feed is the perfect option. Applying a liquid feed every 4 weeks, will not only help the soil but will also help the lawn turn greener in colour by making the grass blades more healthy.

Warm-season grasses, such as Zoysia grass and Bermuda grass, are better suited for warm climates with heavy clay soils. They have a deep root system that can penetrate the soil and provide excellent drought resistance. It’s also important to consider the amount of sunlight your lawn receives. If your lawn is in full sun, you may want to choose a grass type that can handle the heat, such as Bermuda grass or Zoysia grass. If your lawn is in partial shade, you may want to consider fine fescues, as they are shade-tolerant and can thrive in areas with less sunlight.
