The 120d has a large fan on the underside of the unit as the high draw COB LED chip tends to produce quite a lot of heat. Along with the fan the fixture uses an intelligent temperature control system. The fans rotation will be varied based on its measurement of the corresponding ambient temperature. The fans go to maximum rotation speed when you press the Auto/Force button. Despite the size of the fan, it is barely audible and I doubt you would be able to hear it even in the quitest of environments.
With the additional Aputure Fresnel, the LS C120D II has a brightness of 135,000 lux at a 1.6' distance. The result was Aputure's first lighting product, the Amaran series of LED panels. However, if you need to modify the Lantern, it also ships with a four-section, fully adjustable, removable light-control skirt. So, if you did need to control the Lantern to predominantly point toward one angle, you could do so. As the Lantern has a 270-degree beam angle, it’s the preferable choice for creating soft, ambient lighting to illuminate an entire area instead of a single subject. This is useful for shots with numerous people, podcasts, open spaces, and because of the the light’s size, scenes that have small spaces. So, I say stunning light, and I guess, like almost everything in photography, that’s a subjective statement. But I really love the light this unit produces, in the situations I’ve used it. I held off working on this article as I wanted to get some good use in with the light as I’d originally planned for this review. That was to use it as my key light for food photography. Aputure also make a fresnel attachment that makes the light incredibly versatile. The attachment features an adjustable lens for flooding and spotting the light output from a 12°-42° beam angle. I haven’t been able to independently verify this, but Aputure claims the light intensity on the wide side is 14000lux, and goes up to a blinding 67000lux at a distance of 0.5M.
