The effects of the Red Thirst subside over time, though some of Sanguinius’ sons seem to be more susceptible to its call than others. The Flesh Tearers, in particular, are widely feared even by their allies for their seemingly insatiable bloodlust in the heat of battle. Commander Dante does his best to suppress rumours of the Red Thirst from spreading to the wider Imperium. He desperately seeks a cure for their affliction – a grave burden that he has placed upon the shoulders of Corbulo, the Blood Angels Sanguinary High Priest.

Though the quest was ultimately a success and the captain of the Terrorclaw slain, only the sergeant survived and returned to Baal. The Sanguinor did therefore not accomplish the quest for his battle-brothers, but through his might and wrath he did render the impossible possible.

As with their progenitors, the Lamenters' Chaplains operate as part of their overall Chapter command rather than subordinate to it in each company as is the case with most Codex-compliant Chapters. This enables the Chaplains to watch for the growing problem of the Red Thirst in the Chapter's ranks, while the Sanguinary Priesthood (the Chapter's Apothecaries) holds a particularly prominent role in Chapter governance and is known by the Lamenters as "the Calix." It appears that the Lamenters' gene-seed may have been tampered with during their creation process by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The full extent of the modifications performed during the Chapter's creation on Mars was likely kept concealed even from the High Lords of Terra and other Adeptus Astartes Chapter Masters of the day: a theory easily given weight by the political turmoil and division that was rife throughout the Imperium during the early 36 th Millennium. Fearing for his safety, Sanguinius wasn't allowed to make public appearances.
