About this deal

Husband and wife Gwen Bristow and Bruce Manning were newspaper journalists in New Orleans when they co-wrote their first mystery novel, The Invisible Host. It begins with eight guests invited to a penthouse by telegram, where they are then told over the radio that they will all soon be dead. “Do not doubt me, my friends; you shall all be dead before morning.” Published in the US in 1930, and adapted for the stage that year, it went on to be filmed as The Ninth Guest. Upon publication of the first book edition it was reviewed by The Times Literary Supplement in its edition of 26 January 1922, which described it as "a whirl of thrilling adventures". It stated that the characters of Tommy and Tuppence were "refreshingly original" and praised the fact that the "identity of the arch-criminal, the elusive "Mr Brown", is cleverly concealed to the very end". [4] The atmosphere of the book is admirable and the story will be read with avidity by all. Undoubtedly the book is a success." — East Anglian Daily Times. [7] But Christie was oblivious. Life was much better now. “As Mrs Neele,” she said later, “I was very happy and contented.” The couple acquired the Greenway Estate in Devon as a summer residence in 1938; [14] :310 it was given to the National Trust in 2000. [63] Christie frequently stayed at Abney Hall, Cheshire, which was owned by her brother-in-law, James Watts, and based at least two stories there: a short story, " The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding", in the story collection of the same name and the novel After the Funeral. [12] :126 [14] :43 One Christie compendium notes that "Abney became Agatha's greatest inspiration for country-house life, with all its servants and grandeur being woven into her plots. The descriptions of the fictional Chimneys, Stonygates, and other houses in her stories are mostly Abney Hall in various forms."
