Their cause is a noble one and keeps the reader on their edge of their seat waiting to see what will become of the characters and their beloved pets. Hardly exactly seaworthy, the Ark this isn't. It was only supposed to be a stopgap before marching to Battersea dog's home where they'd hoped sanctuary awaited their pets: the best-laid plans etc.

PERFECT FOR: Chapter-by-chapter teaching resources with creative writing tasks and extra-curricular opportunities I really enjoyed reading this book which as well as being 'historical' fiction, is also a great adventure story. I was fascinated to learn it was inspired by true events in WW2 Britain.

One of the harshest aspects of the book for a modern reader is reading how children of the time were treated; how well do you think today's child would cope in 1940s Britain? From the best-selling and multi-award-winning author, Phil Earle, comes a second masterly story all about bravery, wartime, loyalty and the much-needed companionship of pets. I had always known that during World War II, families in England sent their children away to the countryside to protect them from the fear of a bomb onslaught, but While the Storm Rages gave me an emotional glimpse into what happens to the beloved pets of these children, who have to make the difficult decision to leave them behind in the most unfathomable possible way. It showed a brutal side to war that I had never stopped to think about. With a light-hearted humorous but still heartfelt touch, Phil Earle swept me away on incredible adventure of one boy's fierce determination to protect the things that matter most to him. They decide to sail the animals to a safe shelter with the help of Noah's father's boat. The two young children are accompanied by animals with their own character traits. This won't make their journey easy.. The plot is touching. While the Storm Rages is an untold story of the Second World War. It has everything – Action, adventure and animals, not to mention courage, and a quest – all as war breaks out in the UK. War is raging.
