About this deal

The latest version features a two-part windscreen mount, enabling you to remove the Miofive when you’re at home or wouldn’t want it visible. That’s a good thing, since it uses 64GB of internal eMMC storage rather than a microSD card. As such, you either connect the dash cam to a computer to transfer and review your footage, or use the accompanying smartphone app. The app is easy to use and has built-in sharing features for uploading clips to Google Drive, OneDrive and other cloud storage services. Capture settings can be tweaked via the touchscreen, but we found that it worked well right out of the box: results from both cameras were impressive, with plenty of crisp detail and decent dynamic range, even in dim and dark conditions. If you’re looking for a stress-free and reliable dash cam, the X1000 gets plenty right. To stop important clips from being overwritten, many of the best dash cams can automatically detect potential incidents and flag the relevant footage to protect it from deletion. Most models with loop recording also allow you to manually tag clips with the same effect, generally by way of a shortcut button on the body of the dash cam. How we test dash cams You can’t fit a dash cam centrally: With no sideways adjustment, the E1 needs to be mounted to the middle of your windshield, otherwise footage won’t be level. However, there are some restrictions to be aware of when using dash cams. Firstly, you’re required to inform all passengers that a dash cam is in operation – something to note if you’re a taxi/Uber driver or driving instructor.

For starters, you get a choice of recording in 4K at 30fps or 1440p at 60fps. You can even have 1080p at 120fps, which might come in handy if you want to watch it in slow motion after an incident (or just for fun). Key specs – Max video recording resolution: 1080p, 30fps; Field of view: 140°; Display: 2in; Extra features: GPS, accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, voice control Furthermore, many dash cams come with additional driver assistance features. These include alerts to let you know about nearby speed cameras and red light cameras, plus a prompt to tell you the vehicle in front has set off – just in case you weren’t paying attention while sat in traffic. You have a small windshield: Because it’s larger than many dash cams, the DashCam 76 can feel like an obstruction in vehicles with shallow windshields. The Miofive isn’t quite perfect; it would be great if you could adjust the horizontal angle of the camera, not just the vertical tilt. All the same, it’s incredible value, and the best dash cam we’ve seen outside the Garmin and NextBase brands. You want a hidden dash cam: Compact dimensions mean the Mini 2 pretty much disappears behind your rear-view mirror, with no impact on forward visibility. The Garmin Dash Cam Live is an Editors’ Choice winner thanks to its low-profile design, 180-degree field of view, 1440p capture resolution, and cellular connectivity. Other highlights include excellent driver assist features (such as forward collision and lane departure warnings), remote live view capabilities, and easy-to-use voice commands. It even comes with a 16GB microSD card and can let you know if you drive away without your phone. Who It's For

A) If you are using a Rear Camera Module and a Dash Cam you need to ensure that a U3 SD card is used inside the camera. It is important to note that our 32GB U3 microSD Card will record approximately 4 hours of HD footage before the Dash Cam overwrites the oldest recordings, or 2 hours if using a rear camera module. The exposure is consistently spot on. The A139 Pro performed well in gloomy or stormy conditions and at night, too, minimising headlight flare while amplifying brightness levels in the image. The interior view is surprisingly clear, and the rear camera footage beats that captured by the Miofive Dual Camera bundle. Most dash cams are designed to switch off when the engine isn't running, so don't worry if your dash cam screen goes off or any power lights turn off. If your dash cam has parking mode, then it will automatically record with the engine switched off. As long as it plugged in properly at all times, then all features should work. Dash cam hardwiring With a large 3.5-inch touchscreen and icon-based interface, the Thinkware X1000 is simple to configure and there’s no need to rely on a smartphone partner app.A) Our cameras have different requirements to other recording devices; this is because they need to keep recording when the SD card is full whilst overwriting the oldest unprotected files at the same time. While features are limited to voice controls and a g-sensor that can detect collisions, we felt that GPS was the only real omission. Unless you need the best dash cam with driver assistance functions, the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 will leave you wanting for very little. Simple, subtle and reliable, it’s the definition of set-and-forget technology. The Nexar Pro is a dual-cam solution aimed at those who spend extended periods behind the wheel, limited to 1080p.

Although they’re called dash cams, you shouldn’t actually fix the camera to the dashboard. Instead, they should be fixed behind the rear-view mirror to ensure the best coverage. You want emergency services on call: Thanks to what3words integration, the 622GW can pinpoint your location and instantly forward it to emergency services. If the worst were to happen, and you need to prove your innocence, the dash cam’s footage could do exactly that. This footage can also be set to include your speed, along with the time and date to help reinforce the validity of your evidence if blame is disputed by the other party. As well as monitoring the road ahead, dash cams can be used to record out of the rear windscreen too, recording footage if you are unfortunate enough to be rear-ended by another motorist. There’s inevitably a slight fishbowl effect, and you don’t quite get the detail you see in footage from the Nextbase 622GW or Thinkware Q800 Pro, but you can expect super-smooth motion, crisp image quality and well-balanced colour, even in overcast conditions. Our only real grumble is that, at night, the image can be a little fuzzy, while headlights and streetlights get a strong vertical flare. Yes, absolutely. Some drivers might not like the idea of a camera constantly monitoring their vehicle, but some models of dash cam (like the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2) are compact and subtle enough to almost disappear behind the central rear view mirror. In other words, once they are up and running you soon forget about them; they just sit there, quietly keeping an eye out, ready to save footage if you’re caught in an accident. With a Sony IMX678 sensor capturing 4K footage at the front and IMX291 sensors handling the 1080p interior and rear views, video quality is excellent. Only the Miofive 4K Dash Cam and Nextbase 622GW capture clearer, more detailed video, and while compression artefacts are visible in places of high contrast, it’s easy to make out number plates, signs and other crucial details.
