About this deal

The British version of This Is Your Life was launched in 1955 by BBC Television. It was initially broadcast monthly, then fortnightly, before becoming a regular weekly fixture in the television schedules by its third series. It ran on BBC Television for nine years before being axed in 1964. When snooker player Stephen Hendry was surprised with the red book in 1990, aged 21, he remarked that he had "hardly had a life". [ citation needed] Ant and Dec presented a one-off episode on The Chris Moyles Show in 2012 celebrating his second-to-last day on BBC Radio 1 with special guests Billie Piper, Roy Walker and Gary Barlow live from the BBC Radio Theatre. Eamonn Andrews, who was born in Dublin on 19 December 1922, was educated at the city's Synge Street Christian Brothers' School, only a short distance from the family home he shared with his parents, three sisters and a brother.Eamonn was painstaking in his approach to the show and worked under immense pressure. Absolute integrity and total secrecy were the show's watchwords. So in November 1969, This Is Your Life was relaunched. The revival was an instant hit for Thames Television, and Eamonn's instincts were proved correct. That first series was extended to 26 editions. Several subjects have been surprised by being asked to read the name on the front of the Big Red Book, including Ronald Shiner in 1958 and Alice Goldberger in 1978

This Is Your Life was created by Ralph Edwards, an American radio and television host. The concept originated on American radio in 1948 and successfully transferred to NBC television in October 1952. Although confident as a radio broadcaster, the idea of appearing on television had not thrilled him. His first venture into the medium saw him losing his tie while clambering into a boxing ring to conduct a live interview.

Hattie Jacques appeared in 1963, with her husband John Le Mesurier who had helped set up the surprise; however, much to her extreme discomfort, she was at the time living separately from Le Mesurier with her lover John Schofield. [ citation needed] This was a departure from the American series in which Edwards expressly forbade the show from ever featuring him as a "victim."
