About this deal

During cleanup, Lana discovers some disturbing journals of her sister, leading her to suspect Sebastian was not the murderer. My husband and I listened to “The Summer House” by James Patterson, narrated by Ari Flaikos while driving from Florida to New Hampshire. My husband is new to audio and was a bit skeptical that an audio book could capture his attention while driving 10 hours a day. Well, this narration made him a believer in the magic of audio novels. One could be forgiven for momentarily thinking that a book titled THE SUMMER HOUSE involves bodies passionately bouncing off of each other over the course of a week or two in June. James Patterson and Brendan DuBois’ novel is anything but that. Yes, there are bodies bouncing throughout the book, but not in the carnal sense. What we have here is a thriller from beginning to end, wrapped around the nugget of an intriguing and puzzling mystery. This was a great novel and one can only hope it is the first in a series. A group of Army Rangers are charged with killing a group of civilians for no apparently no reason and to add to the drama they will not defend themselves or accept any help. Once again Beevis has written a great thriller and I enjoyed it immensely. I have nearly read all of this author’s books and have yet to be disappointed (no pressure there then, Beevis!).

Flossy Merrill has managed to—somewhat begrudgingly—gather her three ungrateful grown children from their dysfunctional lives for a summer reunion at the family’s Rhode Island beach house. Clementine, her youngest child and a young mother of two small children, has caused Flossy the most worry after enduring a tragically life-altering year. But Samuel and his partner Evan are not far behind in their ability to alarm: their prospective adoption search has just taken a heart-wrenching turn. Only Paige, the eldest of the headstrong Merrill clan, is her usual self: arriving precisely on time with her well-adapted teens. Little does her family know that she, too, is facing personal struggles of her own. When Flossy Merrill summons her children to the beloved family beach house to celebrate their father’s eightieth birthday, both cherished memories and long-kept secrets come to light in this charming and lyrical novel from the author of The Lake Season and Mystic Summer. While they’re cleaning out the house the twins come across a hidden journal belonging to Camille, their sister. After more information is found Lana starts to wonder if she actually saw her boyfriends brother that’s night or if someone else killed Camille.

The writing in The Summer House is excellent, and the story is well paced. I was engrossed in this book and invested in the characters. They seem like real people that you'd enjoy getting to know. My Year in Nonfiction 2023 #NonficNov #NonfictionNovember #NonfictionBookParty #bookblogger #blogger October 31, 2023 Sophia Jansson, the late author’s niece and the inspiration for the granddaughter character in the novel, tells me over Zoom that she never realised her family wasn’t “normal” growing up (“whatever normal is”). The Janssons were adventurers, discovering the uninhabited islands on which they would go on to spend every summer and campaigning in Sweden for girls to be allowed to camp outdoors. Following the death of her mother when she was six, Sophia’s “core family” was made up of her father, her grandmother, her aunt Tove, and Tove’s partner, the artist Tuulikki Pietilä.As executors of our grandmother’s will, my twin brother, Ollie, and I needed to empty the house for resale.
