About this deal

Conchology is now sometimes seen as an archaic study, because relying on only one aspect of an organism's morphology can be misleading. However, a shell often gives at least some insight into molluscan taxonomy, and historically the shell was often the only part of exotic species that was available for study. Even in current museum collections it is common for the dry material (shells) to greatly exceed the amount of material that is preserved whole in alcohol. Shells are now, like, super rare and there's a Dutch tulip mania surrounding them. To the point that if a few dozen shells make their way into the world, it will crash the global economy. Or something like that. The world building in this book is sketchy at best, illogical and highly unscientific at worst (which is any time the reader stops to think about it). To begin, the food chain repercussions aren't even touched on.

I do not know much about magical realism in fiction and the non-religious part of me (admittedly a sizeable part of me) wants to hold it at some distance. But I do not think that Anthony Doerr can be best enjoyed without some willingness to suspend disbelief. The skill of his writing makes me want to grudgingly say, “Well, I suppose I could go that far …” And, once on the slippery slope, I am subject to the obviously real force of gravity. In Light there is open debate about the likelihood that the diamond actually has real magic properties. And in Collector I understand that there is some real discussion of the potential medicinal benefits from the poison of cone shells. I am susceptible to the belief that Nature does have some truly astounding aspects; the concept of a soul has a certain appeal. Maeve has lived on the beach her whole life, and if she had her way about it, would die here too, someday. She walks to shore daily gathering treasures from the sea. She is an admired member of the community and is loved by all.

God's hand placed Amanda where she would meet Maeve, and they blessed one another, in more ways than one. We are given unconditional love at all levels, and the gifts keep giving. Like other scientific fields, conchologists have a number of local, national, and international organizations. There are also many organizations specializing in specific subareas. Choroideremia /kɒˌrɔɪdᵻˈriːmi.ə/ (CHM) is a rare, X-linked recessive form of hereditary retinal degeneration that affects roughly 1 in 50,000 males. The disease causes a gradual loss of vision, starting with childhood night blindness, followed by peripheral vision loss, and progressing to loss of central vision later in life. Progression continues throughout the individual's life, but both the rate of change and the degree of visual loss are variable among those affected, even within the same family. Source So emotional! I loved this story so very much. Yes, lots of tears. Life, death, love, loss, acceptance and moving on.

This is such a charming book. Readers will delight in the characters as I know I did. My personal favorite is Maeve. She is like the grandma that everyone needs and wants. In fact, she kind of reminded me of another character...Mrs. Miracle from author, Debbie Macomber.

Many of Rumpf's terms were later adopted by Carl Linnaeus. The study of zoology, including conchology, was revolutionized by Linnaeus and his system of binomial nomenclature. Six hundred eighty three of the approximately 4,000 animal species Linnaeus described are now considered to be molluscs, although Linnaeus placed them in several different phyla at the time. [2] The English word "conchology" was coined in the 1770s by the British Sephardi naturalist Emanuel Mendes da Costa, who published The Elements of Conchology: or, an Introduction to the Knowledge of Shells in London in 1776. [3] So after their bout of "comfortable, writhing, squirming" embraces, Maya and Ness go to his Caribbean island hideaway for no story reason other than it makes a "romantic" setting. Sure enough, once more she fails to get the story but finally consummates the relationship in yet another burst of repetitive coy metaphors and clauses. Oh, and she ignores all the messages from her boss because, again, she's so good at her job that way and because it is plot convenient. .
