About this deal

Bringing together an artful blend of nostalgic references, emotionally-wrenching characterisation, and stunning worldbuilding, Josh Winning’s “The Shadow Glass” is a delight of a debut.”—Tori Bovalino, author of The Devil Makes Three and Not Good For Maidens In the Eight Kingdoms, none have greater strength or influence than the asha, who hold elemental magic. But only a bone witch has the power to raise the dead. Tea has used this dark magic to breathe life into those she has loved and lost...and those who would join her army against the deceitful royals. But Tea's quest to conjure a shadowglass, to achieve immortality for the one person she loves most in the world, threatens to consume her. Epic, edge-of-your-seat fantasy in its own right, with just enough horror to keep things interesting. The world-building is fantastic, but it's the beautifully drawn characters that I think will capture readers' hearts, as they force us to think about growing up, growing old, and the importance of hanging on to that sense of wonder that the best fantasy (like The Shadow Glass itself) can inspire.' This debut novel of historical fiction/fantasy seemed, at times, repetitive and dragged a bit. A taut, more compact version would have increased this reader's enjoyment. That said, the last third of the book was atmospheric, suspenseful and barreled toward a satisfying, unexpected ending. Ultimately though this is a story of the power of fandom. I love, love, love the way Winning portrayed fandom and our obsessions; the way we collect as much merchandise from the movie as we can – figures, games, posters, novelisations. The way we also collect as much information as we can, always trying to delve that bit deeper. How we band together in our nerdom. Movies, books and games can have such a wonderful impact on our lives. The scene with The Dragon Con illustrated this perfectly and was an absolute delight.

My name is Eleanor and I have one final wish. To share the account of my life, because only then will you understand my story, my choices, and my reasoning. Only then should you judge me. There’s a stirring sense of adventure, excitement, and terror running throughout…a treat for fans of the movies that inspired it.”– Publishers Weekly So then some wishes happen, Mr. Pembroke happens, Mr. Pembroke's son arrives on the scene with interesting results, and...yeah. Ella, being the kind of stupid that the plot needed her to be, says yes without thinking it through. It's only a matter of time before Mr. Pembroke turns his eye on Ella—and to Ella's worry, on the even younger Aoife—and Ella feels this is her only choice.

Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments The Shadow in the Glass was pitched as a dark Cinderella retelling. It was really dark (and sometimes really triggering), but it was a very loose retelling. It follows Eleanor who is a maid for a cruel master. She wishes to be out of that place and stumbles upon a book that allows her to enter into a deal with a suspicious lady. Seven wishes in exchange for her soul.

I love how The Shadow Glass looks at lines between evil and good. Between good intentions and destruction. Between minimizing the loss of lives when they have to be paid. I don’t think there’s this clean line between evil and good, between destruction and creation. Tea’s actions, even if they hurt people, are still motivated by a desire to uncover the truth, to change the world for the better. The question is intent, and when it becomes twisted beyond belief. Overall, I was granted seven wishes and on completion of the seventh wish that she awarded me, my soul would be hers for all eternity. It is only after the completion of the 2nd wish that I realise my folly, because for one wish to be granted then someone else must die and I find myself tangled in this web of destruction where more wishes are needed to undo part of each "spell" and protect the ones I love. My plan of not using the seventh wish was my greatest error of judgement, as I am reminded. If you want something my dear you must ask for it. … I may not give you what you wanted but I did give you what you asked for’Honestly, I don’t remember what their motivations were at all. Did they want to destroy the world or take it over? Were they doing this for any specific reason? Haven’t the foggiest. They were the evil puppets, and the good puppets needed to stop them, that’s as much as really matters for this book. The Bone Witch, The Heart Forger, and now The Shadow Glass have been some of my favorite books of all time. I am in love with Tea, her journey, and the rich world Rin Chupeco has created. Summary Oh boy, I do not want to write this review. It's always hard when you expected to love a book and then...you really, really don't. Tea continues to go against her training and find her own path toward what's right for the world, though for most of book she's afraid to follow that path because it means so much personal loss. Her transformation remains unclear until end. An array of LGBTQ representation: One character is transgender, one gay, two lesbian.
