About this deal

On fleeing the scene, Scarlett finds a crashed bus, all its passengers dead but for a lone boy hiding in the toilet. Enter Albert Browne, “awkward, skinny and wide-mouthed, like a frightened skeleton”, and seemingly a piece of powdery chalk to Scarlett’s pungent cheese. Her scathing sarcasm (and Albert’s obliviousness to it) provides many a laugh: “You just holler if I get in your way,” she seethes as he admires a seed pod while she sets about making a fire, cooking a bird and establishing a camp for them, and all while they’re being pursued. But, for all his unworldliness, Albert turns out to have hidden talents. Sensing he might be of use to her after all, Scarlett agrees to help him accomplish his own mission. Albert wants to reach the Free Isles, remnants of London that “don’t have any restrictions on who you are or what you can do. They welcome people who are...different”, unlike the dictatorial High Council of the Faith Houses, which is “desperate to keep the old ways going”, and “on the watch for any kind of deviation.” Trouble is, as their respective pursuers close in, time and space is running out for our unforgettable outlaws. Britain was a land of ruin…the country was maimed and broken - but full of strange fecundity and strength”. It’s also brimming with the likes of bears, wolves, flesh-eating spear-birds and gruesome cannibal creatures, all of which whip-smart, cuss-uttering Scarlett takes into her swaggering stride. She makes an unforgettable impression from the off: “A slight slim figure in a battered brown coat, weighed down with…all the paraphernalia of a girl who walked the Wilds.” After killing four grown men who’d tried to rob her, Scarlett struts into a bank and proceeds to hold it up (turns out she needs money to repay a debt). In this world, any child who has physical or mental difference is cast out of the cities. Albert was put in a prison and tortured for being different and Scarlett was cast out for an unknown reason. By living on the river, a boat operator protects his granddaughter who's unable to speak from the scorn of the cities. This book was wonderfully written and the world was real enough to get inside. I felt like I was really on an adventure with the characters, and it was delightful.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne by Jonathan Stroud - Waterstones

My only qualm was that this felt like an epilogue. I didn't feel that sense of completion went the story ended; it felt like the beginning. An irresistible juxtaposition of gunslinging Wild West and waterlogged dystopian England… A thrilling adventure in an inventive new world – long live Scarlett and Browne!” LoveReading4Kids exists because books change lives, and buying books through LoveReading4Kids means you get to change the lives of future generations, with 25% of the cover price donated to schools in need. The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Stroud, Jonathan The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne: Stroud, Jonathan

Scarlett gave a bleak half-smile. “It is not really so strange. When I sit upon it, I am in a state of grace.” The problem is that Albert is very sheltered and knows little about the outside world and yet he doesn't ask a lot of questions. Scarlett isn't interested in asking a lot of questions and finding things out. She doesn't really care and doesn't want to get attached, so we the readers are left in the dark.Chosen by our Guest Editor April 2021, Geraldine McCaughrean ;The heroes of The Outlaws Scarlett & Browneby Jonathan Stroud don’t have an easy time of it. Dangers and horrors pelt them like hail. There’s barely a let-up in the relentless terrors of a post-apocalytic England. Monstrous creatures, and even more monstrous humans, dog every move of gun-toting Scarlett and the weird boy she has to keep rescuing. He’s an annoying pest who’s slowing her down. Or is he? The more she – and we – learn of Albert, the more remarkable he proves to be... Families can talk about the likable villains in The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne. Albert and Scarlett kill a lot of people and Scarlett steals. What makes them likable? Do they have other options, living in this already lawless world? Does that make their killing seem less of an offense?

Stroud gives us a Wild West type dystopian England that was a bit of a character in itself. The world is wrought with Tainted humans, oversized animals, and people who make their own rules. He gives us elements of fantasy and dystopian without it feeling familiar. He is an effortless writer (I know he probably isn't and cries behind his laptop sometimes as we writers do) but I'd like to keep this illusion going. I like to think of myself as someone who is pretty up to date on books. I know the new releases in all genres, I take weekly trips to B&N, mostly just to walk around, see what's on the up and up and add to my neverending tbr. I participate in cover reveals, book tours, etc, and casually stalk new authors on social media.Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close Set in a broken, future England, where gunfights and monsters collide, this is the exciting first title in a phenomenal fantasy teen series by the bestselling children's novelist. The characters are both likeable, they bounced off one another. Scarlett quite mouthy and opinionated whilst trying to find a way to survive in the harsh world. Browne having not seen the real outside world before was like a cat in the headlights, mesmerised and overwhelmed by everything and he needed Scarlett’s help. He was also keeping a few big secrets about why he is wanted. Albert was nothing but a nuisance to Scarlett but became her friend. Scarlett started off as a guide to Albert and ended up becoming Albert's inspiration.

The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne by Jonathan Stroud | Goodreads

I've never read an ARC before but this reads the way I'd imagine an ARC to read. It's not bad. There are things that need to be expanded upon in the next revision. There is potential but it never fully materializes. Un misto di western e fantasy, con Scarlett che è una giovane fuorilegge abilissima e senza paura, capace di fare fuori quattro briganti che l'hanno attaccata di notte, e al mattino dopo di derubare da sola la banca di una cittadina.I loved The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne. I think it was wonderfully written and the world was real enough to get inside. I felt like I was really on the adventure with Scarlett and Albert, and they were delightful characters to go on an adventure with.
