About this deal

She was supposed not to have upper-class upbringing and mingled all her life with lower class, but despised the lower class.

Kokkola, Lydia and Van den Bossche, Sara. (Eds). (2019b). Cognitive Approaches to Children’s Literature and Culture. Special issue of Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, 44(4). In children’s detective fiction, the characters’ drive to solve a mystery by filling cognitive gaps has also prompted the transgression of boundaries of space, age, gender, role and status. This enables young sleuths to assume non-traditional roles, particularly outside the realm of childhood. While Christopher Routledge ( 2001, p. 64) claims that in children’s detective stories “the discourse of adulthood attempts to overwhelm and eradicate the discourse of childhood,” I would argue that the mystery—inquiry—revelation script in children’s literature includes access to dominant discourses and forms of power. I will refer to the children’s detective script as the “master detective script” after Astrid Lindgren’s classic Master Detective: A Kalle Blomkvist Mystery ( 1946), which adeptly reflects the child sleuth’s and reader’s imaginary acquisition of status and power in children’s detective fiction. What a great start to a new and exciting series. I'll definitely look forward to the next instalment. Highly recommended.Springer, Nancy. (2020/2006). Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess. CIPHER SOLUTION “TIPSTAILS” INDICATES HOW THE CIPHER IS set up. To solve, divide the cipher in half: ABOMNITEUNTNYHYATEUASRMLNRS MLOIGNHSNOOLCRSNHMMLOABIGOE The first line of letters is “ivy tips,” the second line “ivy tails.” Following the letters up and down between lines: AMBLOOMINGINTHESUNNOTONLYCHR YSANTHEMUMALSORAMBLINGROSE Then, separating the result into words: AM BLOOMING IN THE SUN NOT ONLY CHRYSANTHEMUM ALSO RAMBLING ROSE The gist is that Enola's mom disappears on her 14th birthday and it turns out that she's been fleecing Mycroft for money. She was supposed to have all kinds of things like gardeners, horse stables, and a governess for Enola. Not so much. Harris, Anita (2004). Jamming Girl Culture: Young Women and Consumer Citizenship. London: Palgrave Macmillan.Someone tried to help protagonist with her life and future, she just ran away (to a place she knows nothing about, based on a childhood fantasy) and when she realized her fantasy is just a fantasy, she has no sense to mend her ways. I enjoyed the way the author focused on women's role in Victorian society and the way Enola and her mother choose to deal with those expectations. The solution of the mystery regarding Enola's mother to revolve around information that would typically be known only to women was clever. Nancy Springer also weaves humor into the ignorant sexist expectations and I found myself laughing out loud at times.
