Many women also know that, deep down, they would probably make the same decision as Francesca, especially for the sake of their children. And, the fact that Francesca’s choice was “the right thing to do” has helped some readers “get over” the infidelity at the core of the story.

A friend sent me a copy a kajillion years ago, so I dutifully read it. I still adore the friend, and have liked plenty of other books she recommended, but I was actually ANGRY with her for WEEKS for causing me to have read this book. This was my all-time "worst book I ever read (to the end)" until I read "The Devil Wears Prada."Orlando Sentinel [2] Publishers Weekly found The Bridges of Madison County "Quietly powerful and thoroughly credible". [9] L.S. Klepp of Entertainment Weekly called Bridges "a short, poignant story, moving precisely because it has the ragged edges of reality". [10] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times praised the novella's "compelling" story for "elevating to a spiritual level the common fantasy, in which a virile stranger materializes in the kitchen of a quiet housewife and takes her into his arms." This book isn't particularly well written but it is a beautiful story and there are some brilliant moments. However, Robert James Waller, the actual author, was a keen photographer and musician, like his fictional Robert. He wrote The Madison County Waltz about this story. You can watch him performing it on the Roseman Bridge, HERE, where he even looks like Kincaid. I don’t want to believe a mother would write in such detail in a letter to her children: poor things! The Bridges of Madison County is a sensitive simple tragic love story. Yet it is not overbearing, cheesy nor mushy. It is a story of Francesca/Frannie, a lonely (but not sex-starved) housewife who did not think that at the age of 45, in just 4 short days, she would find her one true love. The man, Robert Kinkaid, a 52-y/o divorced travelling photographer also felt the same for her. What happened on those 4 days: each moment, each sight, each word, each action, each kiss, each time their bodies touched... they carried with them as treasured secret memories for 22 years living their own separate lives Francesca Johnson is a farmer's wife living in Madison County. She is at peace with her life, but she is unhappy. She is a passionate woman, with hopes and dreams that are as untamed as the wildest windstorm. When freelance photographer Robert Kincaid stops at her doorstep seeking directions to the various covered bridges in the area they find themselves caught up in a love affair that knows no boundaries. Thereafter, the narrator locates a musician friend of Robert’s, who says that Robert had told him of their love affair, and he composed a musical piece for Robert about it, which Robert loved to listen to in the months prior to his death. This article is about the film. For the book, see The Bridges of Madison County. For the musical, see The Bridges of Madison County (musical). For the bridges, see List of Madison County Covered Bridges. Some readers loved The Bridges of Madison County for exploring the grey areas that comprise real life.

But, I am, after all, a man. And all the philosophic rationalizations I can conjure up do not keep me from wanting you, every day, every moment, the merciless wail of time, of time I can never spend with you, deep within my head. I love you, profoundly and completely. And I always will. The Bridges of Madison County was also adapted into a popular 1995 movie in which Clint Eastwood produced, directed, and starred. And, “forbidden love” is a trope that has firmly captured hearts and minds since Shakespeare’s time ( Romeo and Juliet). It can be said that, if you really want to keep an audience captivated, then create friction that keeps the romantic leads. Their togetherness brings closure and allows the reader to move on mentally, whereas an external force causing the protagonists’ separation makes the reader yearn for more. She wrote that longing is a muse that often shows up for women in love as “I’m waiting for you.” She goes on to discuss the fact that the idealized courtship phase of love, like that presented in The Bridges of Madison County, is what people often hope for, as they believe that is when their yearning is complete and they have reached the goal line.
