About this deal

The film has changed much of my original story. Of course it has. The book takes about seven hours to read, while the film is 106 minutes long – so some of the story has to go. Liberties must be taken for a film adaptation to work: novels and film scripts are like comparing apples to oranges. Born into the lowest class of her society, Flora 717 is a sanitation bee, only fit to clean her orchard hive. Living to accept, obey and serve, she is prepared to sacrifice everything for her beloved holy mother, the Queen. Yet Flora has talents that are not typical of her kin. And while mutant bees are usually instantly destroyed, Flora is reassigned to feed the newborns, before becoming a forager, collecting pollen on the wing. Then she finds her way into the Queen's inner sanctum, where she discovers secrets both sublime and ominous. Enemies roam everywhere, from the fearsome fertility police to the high priestesses who jealously guard the Hive Mind. But Flora cannot help but break the most sacred law of all, and her instinct to serve is overshadowed by a desire, as overwhelming as it is forbidden... I love getting lost in a story and this author is a great storyteller. The characters in this novel are unique and brought together by unusual circumstances! I grew to love our three main characters and how they came together and drew strength from each other.

The Bees by Laline Paull | Goodreads

The world-building is amazing - the psychology and structure of a bee society is already interesting and weird enough, but add a little bit of dystopia, interaction with other species and real-life ecological issues and I cannot complain. One of my favorite sentences from this review was left out on purpose because I felt weird posting it to GR. You can see it here if you're so inclined. The Bees is one wild ride. A sensual, visceral mini-epic about timeless rituals and modern environmental disaster. Paull's heart pounding novel wrenches us into a new world. So I’m glad to say that after the film adaptation of my novel Tell it to the Bees was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018 I wasn’t weeping, but applauding. This lovely book is not only a sweet and tender walk down a road that was filled with anxiety, sorrow and stress for the three main characters, Alice, Jake, and Harry, but it is also a tale that in hurt and sadness there often lies friendship, kindness, and perhaps even a touch of love. Rapid Aging: Flora's daughter goes from an egg to a fully-grown bee in about three days, despite other bees taking that long just to go from larva to pupa. No explanation is given. For Flora 717- it is almost over for her as soon as her little life begins. She is not like the others in her hive- she is bigger and darker than the other bees- and being different is never allowed- Deformity is evil. Deformity is not permitted. With a little bit of humor and a whole lot of heart, The Music of Bees tells the story of how to overcome adversity and move forward in the face of tragedy, and pain.

August Boatwright: The eldest of the Boatwright sisters, a beekeeper, and a well-respected businesswoman in the community. August was Deborah's best friend. It’s not that fictional lesbian love stories should always end happily. But so often on screen the lesbian either has to commit suicide, die tragically or be a psychopath – so giving lesbians a happy ending has come to be seen as a political act. Synchronicity on honey turns out to give an insanely great read. Watership Down crossed with 1984, Forrest Gump, The Red Book and the Memoirs of a Geisha. Insect Gender-Bender: Averted. Aside from the level of sentience displayed by the bees, the novel is an accurate portrayal of roles within a hive, including the vast majority being female and the few males treated well but born only to breed. It is a beautiful and cautionary tale about bees and how they are necessary to life on earth as we know it and how certain pesticides can be the enemy of the people and bees.

How to Vote

I went into this book without knowing much about this particular insect and its way of life, but by the 60%, I had the strong, unbearable urge to watch Bee documentaries! There are some pretty good ones actually... Of course, apart from the fact that worker bees are supposed to die after they sting, the author really knows her stuff! Ok, but that's not even the point! The Hero Dies: Flora dies shortly after her daughter mates with Sir Linden, becoming the Hive's new Queen. This is my ninth honeybee themed story. It was entertaining with likeable characters, all of whom are facing big challenges in finding their purpose in life. They are not out of the ordinary in scope and thus quite believable and relatable. An interesting read by an eminent honey bee scientist on the workings of a honey bee colony." – recommended by Karin Alton Eric Grissell was a co-founder of the International Society of Hymenopterists.
