A straightforward, nutty and malty single malt from Speyside, the Singleton of Dufftown was released to replace the Singleton of Auchroisk. It’s aged in a high proportion of European oak casks.

I’m no expert, but I enjoy the character of single malts. Not everyone likes the flavour of every single malt, but they all have a distinct personality or they are not single malt. Nose: Bubble gum. Dense fruit punch aromas, Red Vines, and a hint of anise. A rest in the glass neither adds nor removes anything from the equation. The name was revived in 2006 in a plan that involved the malt of three distilleries, combined to create a single malt super-brand that could challenge the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich for sales. Dufftown was chosen along with Glendullan and Glen Ord. The Singleton of Glen Ord was originally earmarked for Asia, while Glendullan was destined for the US and Canada. The Singleton of Dufftown, meanwhile, remained in Europe. Today, however, all three brands are available worldwide in an attempt to boost sales. So far, it’s been working. The Singleton regularly resides among the top five best selling single malt brands in the world.

Palate: medium to full bodied and quite cloying. In a sense I want to describe it as rich but I'm reminded of a cut-price supermarket dessert which has chemicals and compounds added to simulate richness. It feels smooth and full bodied but in an overly engineered and synthetic way. It's as though the brief was to come up with something deep, rich, smooth and easy drinking. The results are successful but ultimately rather unsatisfying. This feels forced. I'm not enjoying it one bit. You are responsible for all activities through your account. I had a similar reaction when I first came across Cragganmore. I expected a delicate dram in the style of Glenlivet but found something more robust, instead. As much as people sometimes like to portray Diageo as the Evil Empire, they really know what they’re doing when it comes to bottling single malt Scotch whisky. This is a Speyside I can get on board with. Fully flavoured and very satisfying.

On the nose you got raisins, sherry, a bit of dried hay and maple syrup. With a bit of water the sweetness takes over with notes of chewing gum and honey. Not build in that way Diageo made the character of the Dufftown malts to fillers for their various blends. Fillers is an ugly word in the whisky business I know but the Dufftown malts are all very light if not to say insubstancial. The Singleton name was first applied to the single malt from Auchroisk in 1986 after the distillery was deemed too difficult to pronounce. When Auchroisk was later added to Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series, however, “The Singleton” was dropped. Finish: once the bitterness fades a decent malt and oak flavour remains for a while. Redeems itself at the last minute, it does. The Singleton Of Dufftown 12 Years is a great starter whisky, perfect for the summer and exactly what you would call an easy sipper. The Scotch has little that disturbs, but also nothing that stands out. The Dufftown distillery first drew water from Highlandman John’s Well in 1896 and continues to do so to this day. The sweet and fruity notes in this fine malt from Dufftown, at the heart of Speyside, are the product of traditional, slow distilling, using pure water from Highlandman John's Well. Long maturation in a unique balance of European and American Oak then gives The Singleton of Dufftown its smooth, richly satisfying taste.
