A fine and profoundly intelligent novel, written by an author who balances big ideas with human emotion. Wistful, yearning and wise. Anton – a roaming journalist who witnesses the building of the Suez Canal before experiencing the horror of war. I have always wanted to return to this territory, and Snow Country, my new novel, revisits the sanatorium that Thomas and Jacques set up in the high days of hope. The big question remains unanswered; but now it is 1934 and the world faces fresh challenges. There are new characters and different stories to tell.I had the chance to hear Faulks’s Interview with Clare Armistead at Charleston, Sussex on 3 Sept 2021, the day of the book’s launch. Some interesting reflections on Snow Country and wider matters were aired: My favourite characters were those of Delphine, a Frenchwoman with whom a young and inexperienced Anton falls in love; and Martha, a therapist at the psychiatric institute. My least favourite character was Rudolf, whose only great passion is politics, and who seems incapable of recognizing human emotions in others, or of responding to them. Sebastian Charles Faulks CBE FRSL (born 20 April 1953) is a British novelist, journalist and broadcaster. He is best known for his historical novels set in France – The Girl at the Lion d'Or, Birdsong and Charlotte Gray. He has also published novels with a contemporary setting, most recently A Week in December (2009) and Paris Echo, (2018) and a James Bond continuation novel, Devil May Care (2008), as well as a continuation of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves series, Jeeves and the Wedding Bells (2013). He was a team captain on BBC Radio 4 literary quiz The Write Stuff.

The story takes place over a 30 year time frame and follows the story of three main characters from Pre World War One through the war and up to pretty much the start of World War Two.

Lena, uneducated, poor, fatherless, her mother an alcoholic who has given away all her other children, starts life with every disadvantage. But she has aspirations, and improves her lot through determination and life experience. At a low point in her life in Vienna, she entertains men, with one of whom in a single encounter she feels an emotional link, immediately lost as this injured soul disappears from her life. I will start by confessing I’m a big fan of Sebastian Faulks writing, and this is another great read. He is most definitely a master craftsman and this is another brilliant work of art. Sebastian Faulks always gets the intimate details of history right and with novels such as Birdsong, Charlotte Gray and now Snow Country he has set a standard so high it will be a long time before any novelist will equal him. Another sure fire hit by one of my favourite authors. Although a companion to Human Traces, Snow Country is less about the analysis of the human mind, but continues the theme of the human spirit. Mainly covering the period from the First World War to the early 1930s, it is a story about love, struggle and survival during the difficult times in Austria following the loss of Empire and the rise of Fascism. The times in which Snow Country is set were cataclysmic, though people didn’t know it. The end point , 1934 was the time of the Austrian Civil War.
