About this deal

Call quality is excellent. All of our test calls were clear and noise cancellation worked without fail. The in-display speaker tops out at 84dB and is loud enough to hear on a busy street. The stereo speakers on the Pixel 6 are excellent, with a maximum volume of 90dB. They’re loud enough to fill a room and produce an impressive soundstage with mellow timbre. The increased weight and less cutesy design help to create the more mature aesthetic Google is apparently aiming for with the Pixel 6, helping it look and feel like a real premium contender. There's some minor loss of fine detail with the ultrawide lens, but no noticeable distortion (Photo: Steven Winkelman) The Pixel 6 also gets a significant leg up when it comes to gaming. In the GFXBench onscreen Manhattan 3 test, the Pixel 6 achieved an average frame rate of 79fps, which, if you take a look at the graph below, is almost three times faster than last year’s phone. Blimey.Boring isn’t bad though – not everyone wants a phone that stands out, and you still get a grey accent above the camera. Google is yet to even officially launch the Pixel 6, and now we’re getting an early unboxing of the Sorta Seafoam model ahead of the October 19 keynote.

Like last year, the Pixel 6 has a dual rear camera setup, although this now consists of a 50MP main camera that captures 150% more light than before and a 12MP ultrawide camera. Note that the sensor on the main camera is a whopping 1/1.3in in size (bigger than the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s main camera sensor) and has pixels that are 1.2um wide. It’s only in specific situations, and the severity can range from “who cares” to actively ruining photos. Honestly, in the weeks and months I've used the Pixel 6 as my primary phone, it hasn't ever bothered me — but depending on what you normally take pictures of with your phone, it could be a big issue for you. Google does include a silicon Pixel 6 case in the box, with additional bumpers above and below the camera gap, to ensure the glass doesn’t scratch against the surface on which you place the phone. We don’t feel particularly confident that it would survive a drop that directly impacted the phone’s rear, however; nor we aren’t sure if the glass on the rear is of the Gorilla Glass Victus protecting the front. On the rear, the Pixel 6 has a 50-megapixel main shooter with an 82-degree field of view and f/1.85 aperture, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with 114-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture. The Google Pixel 6’s specs were another great mystery: just how good would the Google-designed Tensor chipset be? While benchmarks don’t see the phone outperforming any leading flagships to any great extent, the phone does have enough power to run smoothly and take great photos.

The Google Pixel 6 redefines phone photo perfection

Ditching Qualcomm and avoiding Exynos and Kirin, Tensor promises a handful of performance and efficiency improvements over last year’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G, and it represents a bold new future for Google. A 4,614mAh battery powers the Pixel 6. In our early battery drain tests, where we stream HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone averaged 23 hours and 11 minutes before shutting down. During a week of regular use, we only needed to charge the phone twice and didn't notice any battery depletion when there wasn't any use. The Pixel 6 supports 30W fast charging via USB-PD 3.0 and compatible third-party adapters. Qi wireless charging maxes out at 12W, but the upcoming Pixel Stand 2 supports fast charging at up to 21W. The phone also features reverse power-sharing capabilities. Sub-6GHz 5G or the Full 5G Experience? So how does Tensor compete with the competition? Looking at the comparison, single-core speeds are matched with the Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100, but Qualcomm and Samsung’s top-end mobile chipsets both outperform Google’s in regards to multi-core processing. The Apple A15 Bionic found inside the iPhone 13 is still top dog in both metrics.

What I can test, however, is whether the Pixel 6 lives up to Google’s lofty performance claims. Running the Geekbench 5 test, which scores both single- and multicore CPU performance, the Pixel 6 scored 1,031 and 2,843 respectively. Compare those figures to the Pixel 5 and we’re looking at a roughly 75% increase in raw speeds. Yes. I think the Pixel 6 is the best phone Google's ever built. It punches above its weight in nearly every way: performance is great, build quality is very good, and the cameras positively rip. We managed to recharge the Pixel 6 to a respectable 47% in 30 minutes – the phone maxes out at 30W of charging via the company’s 30W USB-C charger, which is an optional extra you’ll have to pay for. In testing, we achieved a little over 80% charge in an hour. The display does tend towards a more vibrant mix of colors than handsets such as the iPhone 12 Pro –and that isn’t only in the overall palette, either. The Pixel 6’s OLED screen displayed greater contrast in adjacent colors, going from brighter to darker hues; side-by-side evaluation of contrast saw the iPhone 12 Pro’s display flatten more of the color together. We noticed blooming and some loss of fine detail in our low-light camera tests (Photo: Steven Winnkelman)
