I read this several times as a kid. I was most fascinated by the experiments at NIMH (a real government organization!) and would read just those chapters over and over. It’s an intelligent book and expects young readers to understand it. It is not condescending to the young audience. Nicodemus and his friend Jenner find a bag of food. They are about to eat, when a net swoops down and catches them. They are taken into a lab, with a total of 63 rats. The scientists inject something into their hips. The scientists are trying to study brains. One rat refuses to give up, and that is Justin. In a 2019 essay, American studies scholar Arahshiel Rose Silver wrote that Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH "reflect the many scientific and technological anxieties present in 1960s American culture". [8] During this period, scientific advancements–especially in the field of genetics–increased fears about the pervasiveness of technology in everyday life. [8] A culture of fear began to grow surrounding unethical medical and scientific practices, which are heavily reflected in the book. [8] Silver argued that Conly's book lays out an example of technological development ending poorly, giving both children reading the book and their parents a lot to think about. Chapters 27 to the epilogue: Mrs. Frisby goes to a meeting with the rats to discuss the men that may be coming for them. They devise a plan to fool the men if they are from NIMH and decide the time has come to move. A doctor came to get the rats, but they outsmarted him and escaped. Mrs. Frisby watches the scene unfold. It is thought that Justin died when the doctor tried to capture the rats. In the epilogue, Mrs. Frisby finally tells her children the truth about the rats of NIMH. Mrs. Frisby warns the rats of what she learned while captured; they assume that the rats at the hardware store were Jenner's group, and that the group of men were from NIMH and are looking for them specifically. To fool the exterminators, the rats get rid of all their human-like technology and make their tunnels under the rosebush look like a normal rats' nest. As the others move, ten rats stay behind so the exterminators will not think the rat hole has been abandoned. When the exterminators fill the rat hole with poisonous gas, eight of the ten rats manage to escape, while the remaining two die in the hole. Once Timothy recovers, Frisby and her family move to their summer home. Robert C. O’Brien was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Williams College and graduated from the University of Rochester. He was a writer and editor for Newsweek, National Geographic, and other publications. He lived in New York City and then in Washington, DC, with his wife and four children. Z for Zachariah—which is now a major motion picture starring Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, and Chiwetel Ejiofor—was completed by his wife and daughter, with the help of his notes, after his death in 1973. He is also the author of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and The Silver Crown. In 1982, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH became the basis for the animated film The Secret of NIMH, the directorial debut of Don Bluth. In 1998, a sequel to the film called The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue was released. The sequel has no connection to Racso and the Rats of NIMH and was met with poor reception.

However, there is a fan that blows away several of the smaller mice. There is a screen that prevents the rats from getting outside, but they unscrew the bolts and get outside. Update this section! this book was one of my mom's favorites when she was growing up, and i read her same copy when i was growing up, and that is a lovely adorable experience even to a cynical nightmarish grump like me. She is just a regular mouse but her love is her strength and I was surprisingly very moved by her adventures. It was also nice to revisit old friends like Justin and Jeremy. I did think it was interesting that even in the world of rodents that the males held all the power and made all the decisions. I didn't notice that as a child. So it be even more extraordinary that a older widowed mother mouse is the hero. I was more inclined to think the rats saved the day when I was little. Now I know where the true strength lies. Mrs. Frisby is the head of a family of field mice. Her son Timothy is ill with pneumonia just as the farmer Mr. Fitzgibbon begins preparation for spring plowing in the garden where the Frisby family lives. Ancient Greece mythology comedy Krapopolis, which comes from Dan Harmon and stars the voices of Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry among others, fits the former as Fox’s first fully owned animated series. Unraveling as a story within a story, there are a lot of really interesting characters presented who each provide missing pieces for the “secret” storyline, and/or serve to better contextualize the greater world of sentient animals living on the farm. My only critique would be that given the large cast of rodents (and birds) in such a small book, I was given just enough plot cheese to nibble on without ever really feeling full on complete character development.
