Perfect pacing, and a femme fatale bursting with promise. Tradecraft respected, the old ways honoured. A middle-aged spy yearning for one last triumph. Plot developed with great promise. Full of quotable passages. Dieter Hess, an aged spy, is dead, and John Bachelor, his MI5 handler, is in deep, deep trouble. The List: A Novella by Mick Herron: 9781616956417

Working in London now, he spends much of his time going to and from Oxford where he lives and continues to work on his writing to this day, as he builds up his extensive oeuvre of different franchises with their now much beloved protagonists. The story follows the lives of the agents who are in the Slough House and how eager they are to prove their worth. Many psychological and emotional aspects of the story work under the hood and give this series the drive and the “standout” factor. Living and working, he is always kept busy working on his next novel, or building his next franchise, as his short stories continue to get published in the Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine publication. Creating a brand for himself, he’s managed to set his material apart from the rest in what is already a fairly crowded genre. Hess often complained about the money that he was paid for his years of service and it seems that he had been finding a way to supplement his income. When a second, secret bank account of his is uncovered, it reveals the possibility that he may have been a double agent. If he was, then this happened on Bachelor’s watch and now his future is in doubt. When Diana Taverner threatens him from everything from a prison sentence, to cancelling his pension, and even Slough House doesn’t look like an option, Bachelor knows he has to clean up the mess that Taverner is clear that he has created. From the latest Scandinavian serial killer to Golden Age detective stories, we love our crime novels!

When one of their own is kidnapped, the washed-up MI5 operatives of Slough House -- the Slow Horses, as they're known -- outwit rogue agents at the very highest levels of British Intelligence, and even to Downing Street itself.
