About this deal

At Chain Reaction Cycles we found 283 products from Fox Racing, of which 10 were in the Pants – Cycle category. Pants are never going to be as breezy as shorts, but the Burner Lite comes closer to any I’ve tried thanks to the lightweight material that feels breezy, and never clammy. There are also laser cut holes galore, with a score or more either side of the knee to draw in air. I’m happy in the Burner Lite up to 20°C or so, which means I’ve been wearing them all this summer without problems.

When the heavens do open, the waterproofing is exceptional and the breathability feels comparable to the brilliant MT500. Where it isn’t quite as dialed as the MT500 is the fit and while there is an articulated knee there isn’t much in the way of tailoring resulting in a loose fit that does flap around in the wind.

About Millets

Breathability is also rated – look for the MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) figure. This measures how much water vapour passes through a fabric and condenses over a 24hr time period. Above 20,000g/m²/24hr means good breathability. Breathability also gets a numbered WVT (Water Vapor Transmission) rating and typically the higher the number the better the sweat evaporating properties are. Typically, a poor breathing fabric will have a rating around 6,000, anything between 10,000 and 15,000 will be acceptable but still sweaty during big effort circumstances, whereas anything 30,000 plus will offer the best moisture evaporating results. What should I look for in the best waterproof MTB pants?

If you’re looking for a waterproof riding trouser that offers meaningful extra warmth, Altura’s Ridge Thermal is a really effective solution. It’s warm and dry, so you can’t argue with the functionality and it’s also really stretchy and easy to move about in.In our tests we found the combination of the performance and comfort of the fabric, and the excellent ride-specific, non-binding fit meant we were happy to wear this pant whether it was raining or not. It’s also served us well hiking in freezing conditions in Scotland.

Look for robust, waterproof panels on those areas most exposed to water and dirt. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Keeping dry means you can spend longer on the trails, makes the post-ride clean-up operation much easier, and also helps you avoid the dreaded soggy chamois. The pants have a good waterproof rating of 10,000mm – measured via a Hydrostatic Head test to determine how much water in a 1in x 1in square column it takes to penetrate the fabric – and a good breathability rating of 10,000g – the number of grams of water vapour able to pass through a square metre of the fabric over 24 hours. Manufacturers describe their garments as having three two or layers but what does this mean? A two-layer fabric is made up of an outer face fabric bonded to the waterproof membrane, usually with a mesh liner hanging inside. On a 2.5 layer, the mesh liner is replaced with a micro (or half) layer, which is either bonded or printed onto the membrane. A three-layer garment has the membrane sandwiched between two Nylon layers. Vents So the first aspect of price that we’re going to look at is the price of Fox Racing Ranger 3L Water Trousers.

True to Gore’s claims, the C5 Paclite trousers kept us dry during testing and didn’t wet through or leak during the post-ride hose-down. We then wanted to get a bit more specific and only look at Fox Racing products that are listed in the Pants – Cycle category.

Help

They’re not rustly and the fabric is a little warmer than some on cold rides, while zipped thigh vents help on warmer rides. They fit true to size and, while there isn’t much stretch in the fabric, there was no excess tension around the crotch or hips. The large, calf-height zip makes it easy to take them off with shoes on. They’re light too, at 167g for our medium pair. The Ranger 3L Water Pant kept me dry in some of the worst conditions I’ve ever ridden in. Ian Linton / Immediate Media Fox Ranger 3L Water Pants performance
