The sights: The C2C gets extra high marks for undulating through three contrasting national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dells and the North York Moors. Unlike American parks, British parks are a different breed; there is no vast wilderness. Instead, they adapt to the realities of the English countryside and weave together a landscape that includes small villages, farms, B&Bs, crumbling castles, cow pastures and wandering sheep. Six high passes with views so spectacular they cross into neighbouring countries, seven idyllic valleys echoing with cowbells, and ten perfect days amongst the fine alpine landscapes that have captured the imagination of mountains and walkers for generations. Your global trekking tour has one clear direction from here – north along the spine of the Andes mountains to Peru. Here you can embark on the four- to five-day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This famed 23-mile (37km) route winds it way along trails used by the Incas, and culminates at the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. If you’re unable to get permits for the Classic Inca Trail (it’s a very popular hike and must be booked in advance), there are additional routes, such as the five-day Salkantay Trail that offer an alternative – but no less captivating – perspective on this region. Think Himalaya, and for many, the immediate thought is Nepal. But spare amoment – or preferably seven days – to contemplate the striking, overwhelming stark beauty of the Indian Himalaya. The sights: Naturally, there is no shortage of Patagonian splendour. Like the famed Torres del Paine, the spiky Dientes rise from the sea and reach almost 4,000 feet at the Dientes de Navarino massif. But unlike trekking in popular Torres del Paine, the Dientes offer an unadulterated man-on-the-moon experience that is almost unheard of these days, and any group of trekkers will likely be the only ones on the circuit.
For extra bragging rights, head for Tierra del Fuego’s southernmost city, Ushuaia, and hit the slopes at the world’s southernmost ski resort, Cerro Castor, with its superb views of the Beagle Channel, ten chair and surface lifts, and 28 ski runs, split pretty evenly between expert, intermediate, and beginner skiers. You can also whizz down Glacial Martial, with its single chair lift, three intermediate runs, one expert and one beginner. From there, you'll pass through cave villages and mountain viewpoints, until you descend through rare subtropical laurisilva forest. From there, you'll slowly descend through the Agaete Valley, the most fertile valley on the island, until you reach the coastal village of Agaete. And yes, it is time to go for a swim and relax now. These mountains are vast and untamed; you’re far more likely to bump into a troop of bleeding-heart Gelada baboons than other trekkers. The sights: Along the route, hikers will undoubtedly encounter koalas resting in eucalyptus treetops, wallabies scampering along the headlands, creek and river crossings, tall forests and deserted beaches with panoramic views from windswept headlands. Unlike other circuits, there are multiple starting points, plenty of route options, public transportation to shorten the trip if something goes awry, and a variety of accommodations, from mountain huts to five-star hotels. For a true vacation, let someone else handle all the logistics, like Ryder-Walker Alpine Adventures or MT Sobek. Or if your legs and lungs can handle it, the route also makes for the most luxurious trail run over 100 miles. We doubt you'll have time to do the entire trail, but the Georgia section is an intrepid 10-day adventure and entirely achievable with annual leave. It takes you through the Svaneti Region, crossing five major mountain passes, and through rapidly changing landscapes, from deep forests to the jagged glacial peaks of the Caucasus. Besides international operators such as Swoop Patagonia arranging multi-day kayaking adventures on Chile’s Río Baker, in Parque Nacional Pumalín and in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine, there are local operators who offer day trips in popular locales. Ski equipment is rented in outdoor gear shops in the respective ski towns, and during ski season, frequent minibuses connect the towns to the slopes. Husky sledding adventures can be tailored to suit your needs For a glimpse of the Swiss Alps before the dawn of tourism, there’s no place like the nature-gone-wild Swiss National Park in The Engadine in Graubünden, where Switzerland muscles its way into Italy. Squished into a remote corner of the country’s southeast, this off-the-radar national park punches high on every level. It’s often so silent that the only sound you’ll hear is that of your own footsteps. The apex of the Atlas range, 13,671ft (4167m) Mt Toubkal is also the highest peak in all of North Africa. You can get up and down the mountain in two days if summiting is all that matters – though making a longer circuit not only helps with acclimatization, but also offers a greater insight into local Berber culture.

Hikers visiting Patagonia’s Torres del Paine often add on an expedition to the national park of Los Glaciares, which offers equally stunning scenery, not to mention a wealth of day hikes and multi-day treks. This 14-mile (22km) hike is one of the classics, carrying you deep into the mountains of the Fitz Roy range. The trek: Spanning 270 miles in Sweden’s far north Lapland province, The King's Trail is superlative for its remote edge-of-the-world vibe, its 24/7 midsummer daylight that reboots your Circadian rhythm, and the August/September aurora borealis that lights up the sky. Hiking the entire trail takes about a month, but because it is broken into sections, you can choose the length of your hike; the most popular section (between Abisko and Nikkaluokta) covers 65 miles and takes between 10 to 12 days. Mother Nature pulled out all the stops in the Bernese Oberland, and the Faulhornweg might be the best day hike to take it all in. This moderately challenging ridge hike throws you in the scenic deep end. Beginning and ending on a high, you’ll take in the full glittering sweep of Lakes Thun and Brienz as you trudge from Schynige Platte to First, and colossal peaks like the dagger-shaped Wetterhorn and the big three of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It’s been described as embryonic by locals; this is not a well-developed tourist trail. Aside from the history, there’s the natural splendour of the mountains: miles and miles of remote shepherds’ huts, rural rambling and airy mountain ridges to take in. Expect to be in the wilderness – no frills or life’s little luxuries await you here, simply miles and miles of a Europe few of us ever get to see.

Now, the Camino is one of Europe’s premier thru-hikes, growing massively from under 10 certified hikers in 1976 to over 350,000 in 2019. The focus and namesake of the Camino de Santiago is the city of Santiago de Compostela in Spain 's far northwest. Legend says it was here that the martyr St. James is buried, which became a rallying point for Europeans fighting the Moors in the eighth century after a shepherd claimed to have seen a bright light in the skies. While there are many routes to “the Camino,” the most popular continues to be the nearly 500-mile Camino Frances , or the French Way, which begins at St. Jean Pied-du-Port, France, traverses the Pyrenees Mountains with a challenging 4,600-foot ascent, then heads west across Spain. The sights: The 11-mile trail is maintained but steep as it crosses above towering sea cliffs and through lush tropical valleys festooned with exotic birds and waterfall rivulets. The first two miles of the trail are a popular day hike and provide a sublime snippet of what’s to come, but to proceed beyond Hanakapiai Valley, hikers must have an overnight camping permit .You can either stay in rustic mountain huts or camp outside them. We'd recommend the latter, as the weather is very unpredictable on the trail!
