The Derwent Chromaflow are one such pencil that are aimed toward those of use who just love drawing, adult colouring book artists, crafters, people like myself who love to use colored pencils and then slip the work into a wallet never to see the light of day again. Derwent Chromaflow Price A long standing range in the company's collection, with some good colours for portraits and animal studies. I find them ideal for animal whiskers over the top of a drawing done in other coloured pencils. At the core of their range are the hardest of the pencils and some of the longest in their production. We use different woods in the manufacture of our pencils and sometimes the wood may change during the lifetime of a pencil range. Chromaflow is made using fine grade pine which is perfect for the slightly slimmer barrel of the Chromaflow pencils. I love that the Drawing and the Lightfast have a crossover of colour names so you can utilise say the Mars Violet (another fave) in the Drawing range for the underpainting of a piece and then use the Lightfast one to add details. Derwent PROCOLOUR pencils

Holbein colored pencils - beautiful pastels, deep darks and stunning brights. The perfect pencil to delight artists? As you can see from the Chromaflow, right from the get go, the very first light layer, the pigment strength is tremendous. I always apply 5 layers as it is generally considered a good idea to apply at least 5 layers before using Odourless Mineral Spirits. The final column is a single heavy and the paper used for this test was the Hahnemühle Agave Watercolor paper, this paper has a nice texture to it, 70% Agave and 30% Cotton. This type of card is invaluable to keep with all your derwent pencils. Watercolour pencils tend to become much stronger on the paper when wet with water, so this guide will help you spot areas and colours to take care with. There is a range of 24 colours. When dry colour is applied they are all shades of grey. The colour only really comes out when water is applied.

In January 2014, Peter sorted out the pencils he uses regularly into a new set of zipped cases and prepared a small card to remind him of the performance of the contents of each set. The card for Inktense is presented here to show the vibrancy of the colours.A look at the coloured pencil brands available in the UK. How they differ and how lightfast they are. Discover the best colored pencils for artists that bring out vibrant, professional-quality results, with this simple test. Sharpening issues aside and as I pointed out this only occurred in two or three of the 72 pencils I used, I have really enjoyed using the Derwent Chromaflow and now the range has been extended can see the Derwent Chromaflow being a real hit for Derwent. Don’t get me wrong, I still stand by my initial assessment and think that had Derwent of remained at 24 in the Chromaflow range, I only feel it would have frustrated people. From a colour-matching perspective, the core vs the colour-dipped end vs the pigment on paper appears to be a pretty good match across all of the colours featured in this set of 12. That’s usually a pretty good sign that all colours will be however there’s usually always one or two that are a bit questionable. I think it fair to say that these fit into a logical slot as a softer version of the Artists/Studio pencil. Information about Koh I noor pencils, now available in the UK. Polycolor are non-soluble and Mondeluz are watercolour pencils.

Derwent Lightfast Pencils

Caran d’Ache brought out the Luminance range a few years ago and these were the best attempt so far at a pencil to meet the American ASTMS 6901 standard. Previous attempts by Prismacolor were dropped as unprofitable and the old Derwent Signature departed many years ago as they were too dry and scratchy (the combination of pigment and binder at that time was not at all good). The relative softness of the core enables strong laydown of colour but there is a need to be careful as over sharpening the point will cause it to easily crumble which is wasteful. The photo above is of the broken tip of the pencil after using a normal-moderate amount of pressure to colour out this swatch. This was my first pencil-to-paper experience and the tip promptly broke. My later usage of the product for my demo drawing was better but I did have sizable chunks of leads break 3 more times including on this same pencil.
