About this deal

Dicebreaker is owned by Gamer Network Limited, a ReedPop company and subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions Limited. Each player starts with six kittens they can place, and must 'graduate' them into cats by making lines of three. | Image credit: Smirk & Laughter Games Manage cookie settings The Dicebreaker team saw and subsequently fell in love with Boop. at PAX Unplugged 2022. Watch on YouTube I think he was hooked right there and then, but if you know Curt, don't play poker with him. He doesn't project until he's sure. He asked to take the prototype home to test. I sheepishly agreed, knowing it was my only example. It was only a few weeks later when he called to tell me he wanted to move forward with it immediately!

Shortly after I signed my first game, Hues and Cues, in August 2019, I began thinking "What's next?" I had caught the design bug and wanted to challenge myself to create more. I've never considered myself a "creative", but I found board game design to be much more. Logic, intertwining of mechanisms, building depth and escalation (and ultimately, fun) – there's so much more to a game than just an idea...and creating that takes much longer than most realize. Every time you place a kitten on the bed, it goes "boop." Which is to say that it pushes every other kitten on the board one space away. Line up three kittens in a row to graduate them into cats. . . and then, get three cats in a row to win. If you have a set of all kittens or a mixture of cats and kittens, remove one of these sets from the gameboard and your supply gains 3 Cats. Note in case of a mixture all cats and kittens are still removed, with the kittens replaced by cats before being returned to your pool. If you have multiple groups of 3-in-a-row, only ONE group can be aged each turn Ryan Lambert and Adam Rehberg’s Planet Unknown found victory in the Strategy Game category, coming out on top amongst board games where complexity takes higher precedence and sessions tend to last a bit longer than a lunch break. The committee explained that while Planet Unknown is a busy “grab bag of interesting features and gameplay” all of it synchronises with a surprising ease that sets it apart from the other nominees. But that isn’t easy with both you AND your opponent constantly “booping” kittens around. It’s like... herding cats!

Boop comes from publisher Smirk & Laughter, which previously put out the exceptional abstract strategy game Shobu in 2019. Where Shobu played the serious part of a traditional chess-a-like, its rustic components gathered together from wood, rope and pebbles, Boop hides its diamond-hard tactical gameplay under the soft, fluffy dressing of cats on a bed.

Take turns placing one of your Kittens onto the bed, in any open space available (stitched squares). Graduate your Kittens into Cats by forming a 3-in-a-row line (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). Then line up 3 of your Cats to form another 3-in-a-row to WIN the game! But it isn’t that simple... Cats and kittens will also stay put if they’re booped into another adjacent piece, providing plenty of chances to utilise your opponent’s pieces for your own advantage - and reasons to be careful about how you line up your own kitties.

Approachable but challenging abstract game and a worthy follow-up to SHOBU. Plays in 20 to 30 minutes.
