Showrunner Maggie Friedman was drawn to the project after hearing about the premise of the book, and was excited to tell a story centered around female friendship. In an interview with Netflix, Friedman explained that the power of these friendships are what help shape our lives. “Your soulmate isn’t necessarily the person you marry or fall in love with,” she said. “Maybe you’ll watch it, and afterward you’ll call your best friend and tell her you love her.”Through the course of the novel, Tully and the rest of Kate’s family must learn to come to terms with their loss and find a way to move forward. They must also learn to forgive each other and themselves for past mistakes. Hannah called Firefly Lane her most personal book, likely due to this final twist. When Hannah was in law school, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Together, they wrote her first book. “I would go to see her every day after class and somehow one day I was complaining about one of my classes. She said, ‘Don’t worry about it, you’re going to be a writer anyway,'" Hannah told The University of Washington Magazine. Hannah's mother eventually died of the disease.
