There’s a dreamlike feel to this story; it takes place in an isolated prison, with only a few prisoners there and seemingly about as many staff (that’s actually not quite clear, unfortunately). The weather is dramatic and eerie, almost a reflection of the emotional state of the characters. And Ellie even lives in a literal cabin, with a fair portion of the book happening there.
