Rather than just ‘buying in’ a third-party smart system from the likes of Google, Roku or LG, the 50UK3163DB unexpectedly deploys a smart system of Toshiba’s own design. Even more surprisingly, this system really isn’t bad. Its presentation is compact but effective, for the most part tidily fitting its content links and apps into a couple of ‘shelves’ superimposed over the bottom few inches of the picture. If ‘Device connected’ message is displayed, then the pairing was successful. If the connection fails, retry. The Toshiba smart platform also offers a good range of streaming apps, including Netflix, Prime Video, Britbox, YouTube, Twitch, BBC Sounds, Deezer and Chilli. Disney+ is notable by its absence though so other sets like the While you won’t be blown away by the audio that the UK31 can produce, the sound quality of its 20W speaker system is more than enough to get the job done for those on a tight budget. It’s bright enough for everyday living room duties and is a solid option for gamers, thanks to an enviably low input lag.

Toshiba 50UK3163DB review: a cheap 4K TV that punches above
The available picture modes include Cinema, Natural, Dynamic, Sports and Game alongside their HDR versions. Cinema, Natural and Dynamic are your best bets, but they come with caveats. The 50UK3163DB isn’t just unexpectedly bold with HDR, either. It also gets impressive value from its native 4K resolution. Good-quality native 4K sources, especially 4K Blu-rays, look much richer in texture, clarity and depth than HD images do, despite the 50-inch screen being fairly small by today’s 4K standards.

TRU Micro Dimming TRU Micro Dimming improves contrast, focussing on all the different regions of the image. The fact that its HDR support stretches to Dolby Vision is particularly welcome, as it shows a genuine interest in trying to give consumers a premium picture experience. In fact, Dolby Vision tends to have more beneficial impact on relatively affordable TVs like this Toshiba than it does on really high-end sets. Lastly, the remote is a big, old-fashioned hunk of plastic – and it isn’t the most responsive either. There’s a smaller remote, but that comes with the more expensive UL7A model. The top streaming apps including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Freeview Play built in as standard up to date and ready to go. The UL5A sports a surprising number of HDMI inputs (four). Other connections include an optical out, LAN, satellite and aerial antenna, two USBs and, interestingly, VGA and component connections. While it makes sense to include the latter for those who wish to connect a PC or other legacy equipment, it does feel antiquated.

The set’s upscaling is quite effective: standard definition DVD footage looks reassuringly smooth, with jaggies on diagonals smoothed out, while HD Blu-ray content is pixel dense, mapped to 2160p. Given that these are some of the most popular services out there offering great shows like The Mandolarian and Ted Lasso, it’s not just disappointing but surprising that you can’t access them natively through this TV.
