H4n Pro Four-Track Audio Recorder | ZOOM

I’m employed as a full time brass teacher in the UK. I wanted to create good quality recordings for my pupils as in these Covid-19 times we are currently unable to blow in the same room as the pupils. The recordings produced are of excellent quality and the ability to add a touch of reverb to warm the sound enables me to produce good quality materials for the pupils regardless of the room I’m recording in. I am really quite impressed with this little unit. Not only does it have a solid look/feel, the size is reasonable, and the resulting sound/recordings are well within my expectations. Integrated multi-effects - with the Zoom G5n as its model: re-tuned effects, guitar amp simulation, phrase trainer and tuner The unit comes with a good case to protect it when shoved in my bag with all the other things I need for my teaching day. Need some recording device to connect to our Yamaha CL5. was easy configuration to connect and sound was perfectly recorded.Built-in effects, including compression/limiting, low-cut filtering, modulation, reverb/delay and amp models OUTPUTS | Monitor your performance with headphones or connect to external devices using the stereo 1/8” line output with dedicated volume control. The Auto-Record and Auto-Stop functions allow the H4n Pro to automatically start and stop recording according to your designated levels. The H4n Pro is capable of recording the loudest and heaviest performances, up to 140 dB SPL without distortion. Take a line-level* stereo feed from the mixing console and capture room ambience with the X/Y microphones. (+4dBu line-level is not supported.) Professional Grade Preamps

Built-in effects, including compression/limiting, low-cut filtering, modulation, reverb/delay and amp models Whether it’s remembering to charge them, bring spares, or the hidden monetary (and environmental) cost of the disposable kind, batteries can be a pain in the butt. If there’s one area the H5 beats the H4n Pro senseless, it’s in the battery. Like the H4, you can record in different file formats, with a range of MP3 and WAV options, from the cruddiest, media-efficient MP3 to 24-bit, 96kHz WAVs. Usefully, you can record broadcast WAVs, with markers for use when navigating or editing audio files, or burning CDs. All this is recorded to SD card (a 1GB card is included). Four Play? Functioning as a 2-input/2-output USB audio interface for PC or Mac, the H4n Pro enables you to record directly to your computer. Never Miss a Take The preamps are surprisingly clear and quiet, I tried them with external condenser microphones - Rode NT2000 large diaphragm and T.Bone EM 9900 shotgun - both worked great for their own purposes.

The quality of the recorded sound is great for a piece of equipment this size. For me this has helped make live recordings a real easy job. For so many years I was just using a long cable with a solo mic attached to my camera but with this one is just so much better to have it station closer to my subject and get better audio and then just sync it on post or record straight to the video. With the mics set at 90 degrees (can be twisted to 120 degrees for wider field) it gave great stereo imaging and a sense of space, albeit with an occasionally strange telescoping effect of far away things sounding near. The surround sound image of this device is incredible but if recording and simply touch or scratch the device lightly you hear it. For example, I was once at a wedding setting up my H5 with an SD card that already had twelve gigabytes of video files written to it. No problem, right? I should have 20 odd more gigabytes of storage.

ZOOM QUICK GUIDE - ZOOM

road test : after three days recording - in the desert - the zoom performed sufficiently … the built in mics were fine for immediate or spontaneous use but I found the sound flat, without depth. The controls of the Zoom H4N — particularly those on the side panels — are much more intuitive to use than those of its predecessor, the H4. Upon advice of a seasoned Zoom-user friend of mine, I used a pair of earbuds to monitor any wind noise as this can ruin a recording, but I found that on a fairly still day there was extremely low noise and, with the record level set at 80% there was no clipping - although it wasn't a loud environment. I made sure to test this as far away from any roads as possible, not easy as I live in a city where traffic noise is everywhere. Stereo Mode: Stereo Mode can be used with the built-in X/Y microphones or external mics, and is convenient for recording live performances, acoustic instruments, and more. Capture two seconds* of audio before you hit RECORD with the Pre-Record function and never miss the start of a great take.

The size of the H4n makes it handy without being too big or too small. The transport buttons are large enough for big fingers. Channel Mode: 4-Channel Mode records with the built-in X/Y mics and two external inputs to capture live room sound and a stereo board feed at the same time. The inability to customize file names is slightly frustrating and the load/start up time is also inconvenient, whilst the protective housing is useful for rugged conditions : ie dust/sand
