This is definitely one of his better books. Not one ex sas bloke who forgot to turn his phone off lol. McNab also worked as an instructor on the SAS selection and training team and instructed foreign special forces in counter terrorism, hostage rescue and survival training. Andy McNab joined the infantry in 1976 as a boy soldier. In 1984 he was badged as a member of 22 SAS Regiment. He served in B Squadron 22 SAS for ten years and worked on both covert and overt special operations worldwide, including anti-terrorist and anti-drug operations in the Middle and Far East, South and Central America and Northern Ireland. Whatever It Takes is a departure from Andy McNab’s normal fare and is his first standalone novel. He brings his impeccable knowledge of military hardwear and high-tech equipment to bear and his usual brisk style pushes the story along at a very respectable pace as Mercer is forced to work for the man he’d set out to rob, who has something he wants to get his hands on, and he’s decided that Mercer is the man with the skills to get him what he wants.

Mr McNabb has done his usual good job of linear storytelling with a bit of action and luxury, but personally, to find out that everyone in the story is performing these massive bouts of self sacrifice all so that the president would be safe if hypothetical global war broke out was a massive disappointment. Until his solo crusade falls foul of the very people he seeks to rob – the one per centers, the people who own the bulk of the world’s wealth. Soon he is putting together a crew to carry out one last robbery, to undertake one last job. Success will restore his family’s fortunes, but failure will destroy them forever. I liked the story a lot overall. I found one of the twist things was obvious, the later one, not so much but they're vaguely plausible and definitely interesting, if you're into thinking like Dr. Pepper/ What is the worst that can happen?

Mercer has to assemble a team who can help him play a get out of jail free card by breaking into a seemingly impregnable mansion. He calls on former army colleagues, dangling the carrot of a very large cash reward for their help. With them comes Mercer’s sister, Charlotte, who’s going to handle the financial side of things.For me this doesn’t quite clear McNab’s usually high bar, but despite that, Whatever It Takes is still a damn good thriller, with likeable characters, well-thought through scenarios that never totally shattered my suspension of disbelief and for that I’ll happily forgive a premise that didn’t quite live up to its initial promise. This is the first Andy McNab book I have read and I thought it was a really good read until the end when I didnt really understand what was happening. La narrazione in prima persona e la scrittura scorrevole rendono piacevole la lettura. Unica nota stonata la trama, interessante e ben articolata, ma a mio avviso poco realistica. Ma questo è un mio giudizio personale che nulla toglie al libro nel suo complesso che risulta coinvolgente e appassionante.

The story is good in places but overall pieces don't really fit and some of the plot is really out there for Andy. I read on just in the hope that this very strange book would offer up some clues. It just got worse..
