Rowser and Smith worked on the graphic novel during the onset of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It was a challenge for both of them, but Smith says, “the joy of getting to draw these characters who I love, and their hair, because hair is my favorite thing to draw… after a while, it just became really therapeutic getting to work on all these stories.” In the end, their hard work paid off.Book Genre: Adult, Comics, Contemporary, Fiction, Graphic Novels, Graphic Novels Comics, LGBT, Queer, Romance, Sequential Art, Young Adult This was an absolute delight in every possible way. I loved the interwoven stories and depiction of friendship. The portrayal of mental health struggle from one character was so relatable and honestly portrayed. I deeply appreciated that. The art was a GIFT. This was one of the best graphic novels I’ve read from an artistic standpoint. I would like to thank Chronicle books and Netgalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review. Davene’s story is also very emotional for me. For people who have not experienced depression, it may not be what you assume it looks like. It doesn’t mean your friend or the person who’s depressed is sad 24/7. We have ups and downs. I have depression and anxiety. You get used to putting on a face because you don’t want people to know or you don’t want to talk about it. And I wanted to show that part of how depression is, but also the other side of somebody who wants to help their friend and realizing maybe you aren’t helping in the way that they really need… I wanted to show Davene using medication and Cookie being against it because that’s reality for a lot of people.

The rest of the stories follow the other friends. Friends of all shapes and sizes. Friends that discuss their love life, and their life in group chats. Friends that sleep around and accidentally run into the two men they slept with at the same event. And friend that keep a nasty "ex" away when he shouldn't be there. I have two qualms only with the book. One, I wish it were longer! The group chat was hilarious and I loved the portrayal of their friendship. I also loved the gorgeous panels showing the intricate braiding techniques and the detail paid to their clothes. I wanted to know more about Cookie's relationship with her abuela, and how Nisha decided to resolve her relationship catastrophe. The second qualm, though, is how the element of one of the characters' depression was dealt with, though. (I think it was Davene?) I loved how supportive her friend was trying to be when she came over, but telling her to "just be positive" and that she didn't need medication and that it could do bad things to her was kind of toxic. And then she gave her a citrine crystal! NOOOOOOOO.
