About this deal

In this book you’ll find 64 routes that, if you complete them all, by default you will also have completed the Wainwrights. A few of the summits are featured in more than one walk. That’s ok. Wainwright Society Aims". The Wainwright Society. Archived from the original on 3 May 2015 . Retrieved 21 April 2015. For this reason, Wainwright humorously argued that it was a spot only fully enjoyable to the imaginative, particularly at the summit, which was “barren of scenic interest”. In the popular walking town of Ambleside, Loughrigg Fell is short in stature, an altitude of only 335m, however, at the summit you can catch a great view of the surrounding fells. With various routes available, the walk can be made as easy or as hard as you want.

Walking the Wainwrights: 64 Walks to Climb the 214

The Wainwrights are an easier prospect for completers than the Scottish munros, being less numerous, all within a relatively compact geographical boundary and generally of a lower height. The original author’s accounts of the fells are true works of art and reflect his sometimes idiosyncratic and always self-assured views of the Lakeland fells but, with a few exceptions, don’t provide the sort of day-long round trips that Graham Uney has put together for this new book. Because of the nature of the layout of the Lakeland fells, some peaks, such as Fairfield and Hart Crag, appear in more than one chapter.Wainwright was a supporter of animal rights and explained that the publisher of his books gave most of the profits from his books to animal charities. [7] In 1972 he became chairman of Animal Rescue Cumbria, and donated enough money to enable the foundation in 1984 of Kapellan, a shelter for stray cats and dogs in Kendal. After his death the society was renamed "Animal Rescue Cumbria – The Wainwright Shelter". [28] There are 214 Wainwrights in total, but there are many different routes up and down, each of which offer a different aspect, view and of course level of difficulty. Alfred Wainwright: Grumpy, reclusive and eccentric". The Independent. 2 July 2005. Archived from the original on 28 February 2009 . Retrieved 19 June 2021. By the mid-1980s Wainwright was a TV personality; he featured in three television series for the BBC, presented by farmer and broadcaster Eric Robson and devised, directed and produced by Richard Else. You can climb this small fell, only 469m, from either Great Langdale or Little Langdale. Either way you are greeted by ‘The Great Wall of Lingmoor’ at the summit, as well as a glimpse of the surrounding fells, which as always make for good viewing. In his book, “A Pictorial Guide to the Lake District Fells, The Southern Fells”, Wainwright personified the landmark atop the highest peak of the Coniston Fells. “The Old Man of Coniston”, was described as being “cruelly scared and mutilated by quarries”, but nevertheless kept his dignity intact.Another reason is that many walkers struggle to devise full-day walks using the Wainwright guide books. Yes, he has detailed pretty much every conceivable way of getting to each individual summit, but this leaves the reader having to then come up with their own plan to make a longer day of it by continuing over one or more other fells. Wainwright didn’t describe day walks in these seven guidebooks. The best route for hill walkers is to start at Ambleside or Rydal and ascend Nab Scar, Heron Pike and Great Rigg to reach the summit of Fairfield. The descent goes like this: Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike to High Sweden Bridge and eventually Ambleside. The publishers announced in 2014 that Clive Hutchby, the author of The Wainwright Companion, was working on the third edition of the Pictorial Guide, with the first volume, The Eastern Fells, published on 26 March 2015 followed by The Far Eastern Fells on 8 October 2015. These revised versions are titled 'Walkers Editions'. [12] [13] Subsequent volumes in the series to have been revised are The Central Fells (published 2016), The Southern Fells (2017), The Northern Fells (2018); The North Western Fells (2019); and The Western Fells (2020). When visitors come to the Lake District, they’ll often base their itinerary on Wainwright’s well-documented walking routes and will try and bag as many fell walks as the time (and their legs!), will allow. But to save you time sifting through his catalogue of routes, we thought we’d bring together our top ten Wainwright Lake District walks, each offering something slightly different, so that, whatever your ability or taste, you’ll be sure to find something to suit you. 1.
