About this deal

Watering is also best done at the beginning of the day, but when the weather is very warm as it has been lately, it may be necessary to water up to three times daily if growing in containers. Maybe a watering system isn’t just for holidays!

Adding a controlled-release fertiliser to your compost at planting time will provide your plants with the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) they need for healthy growth, but they may well be running low by the time your tomatoes start to ripen. If you haven’t added a controlled-release fertiliser, you should start giving your tomatoes a liquid feed once the first truss of fruit has formed. Certainly after the recent rain my four outdoor plants don’t look very happy so will see what Epsom salts and aspirin do for them. This produced the largest yield of ripe tomatoes in our trial with a whopping 14.3kg from three plants. True to its name, it’s ready to use and doesn’t need diluting. Simply pour it on to the compost at a rate of two 50ml capfuls twice a week (once the second truss of fruit has formed),followed by 500ml of water each time. It’s ideal if you have only a few plants and don’t want to waste feed you’ve diluted. Can be used for other crops such as peppers, chillies and cucumbers. (our guide to growing cucumbers is here.) I was speaking with my brother the other day and he told me he uses tomorite for all his plants (he only has pots and hanging baskets) and he uses it every other day.Thank you so much for your answer. The plant in question is at the front of the greenhouse so receives all of the sun that the sky can throw at it, while it shades the other varieties. Therefore I’ll try the fleece as you suggest. Do curled leaves ever uncurl or are they permanently like that? I guess no need to remove them though? This photo shows just how much difference regular feeding makes. Both ‘ Frilly Cuff’ roses were pruned at exactly the same time and to the same height, but the big difference is that one has been fed fortnightly, whereas the other one hasn’t been fed at all. As you can see the plant that received a regular feed is much bigger, healthier and is bursting with buds. Many feeds are available, but the one we w ould most recommend is Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic, which we used for this demonstration. Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic will not only encourage strong healthy growth but will also increase disease resistance.

The technical name for a wetting agent is “surfactant” but don’t let that put you off – washing up liquid is a surfactant too! Dilute 20ml in 4.5 litres of water for tomatoes/potatoes and dilute 10ml in 4.5 litres of water for peppers and aubergines.
