About this deal

The concept sounded just right. Young people trying to find themselves in each other. The book is told from Jess's point of view. There is the usual mix of campus stuff going on but some of it was not what I expected. The book is well written. The characters are messy. I did like this book but I also found myself wanting more. I will read more from this author in future. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Jess Walker experiences a lot during her first year of college. She has two main focuses - a love interest and a professor she idolizes. The love interest situation is complicated, and it's more of a love triangle than anything. The professor is Dr. Lorna Clay, and she's teaching a class on Agatha Christie that Jess is enrolled in. Jess soon starts to look to Lorna for advice and support. Why does Jess admire Lorna Clay so much? What about Lorna inspires Jess? How did you see Lorna at the start of the novel? Did you feel differently about her by the end?

If I had seen the U.S. cover and read the comparisons to The Secret History, I would have better understood what this book was aiming for, and that it wasn't a book for me. Instead, I thought I was getting some Agatha Christie-inspired thriller and a bit of a first love story. Serious stuff. Enabled by the wonderful Charles Bradbrook of SRLV who kindly offered to have that excellent accounting firm take care of all the necessary financial governance without charge – a very substantial charitable gift in its own right. Their efforts are in turn enabled by the Truant’s Heartbeat, Helen Curl, our most tireless and excellent administrator who takes on all the Truants work on top of her near impossible job of being Rod’s PA. The rest of the work we split between the Truants gang, whether it’s organising golf days and auctions; liaising with regulatory bodies and charities, or just trying to find Barry. As you read this you’ll see that what started out as a great idea has become a very serious donor to our 4 UK children’s charities. Our success meant our admin and accounting needed to move beyond the excellent and accurate efforts of Ruth Fluin-Hardy and Nordoff Robbins – to whom the Truants owe a huge debt of gratitude – and so we decided to set up our own official charity:

I loved the amount of drugs in this book, finally a campus novel that includes a real perspective on campus drugs It was very conscious! I made Lorna a teacher and expert in Agatha Christie, and there is a murder mystery element to the book and plenty of references, buried or otherwise, for die-hard Agatha Christie fans. But I was also influenced by a real life episode in Agatha’s life: her famous eleven-day disappearance. The idea of people disappearing, both literally and emotionally, became a running theme through the book.At the beginning of the novel, Jess thinks of herself as "a bystander: a witness, an observer" (p. 21). Why does she see herself this way? Does this identity change once she goes to college? How does Jess see herself at the end of the novel? The Truants sounded right up my street with a cast of non-conforming rebel students, but I must admit that I was astounded to find this is Weinberg's debut novel as it's such an accomplished, original book. It revolves around main protagonist, Jess, and her current feelings of being the centre of attention when she has only ever blended into crowds seamlessly to become anonymous. Campus novels don't usually work out well for me as I'm not such a big fan but this had everything associated with the subgenre but with more tension and the suspenseful atmosphere Weinberg creates is clearly a rare and raw talent. Statistics showed that 67% of truancy-related calls were related to children aged 13-15. Just 2% of the organisation’s truancy related calls concerned children aged 4-9, and 9% concerned children aged 10-12. (Parentline) It is possible that the CIO will make grants to overseas registered charities / local schools or orphanages. If it does so, the Trustees will have regard to the Commission’s guidance for grant-funding overseas organisations, to ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place for monitoring the end use of funds.

I am curious if anyone else has noticed the abundance of commas. I am for sure not a pro at punctuation. I use way too many commas and most likely not in the correct context and places. Most of the time while reading this the endless commas kept jumping out at me. I found myself rereading sentences and random words and this doesn’t typically happen to me when reading. I understand everyone’s style of writing is unique and that’s what makes so many different styles. It was just noticeable enough to make note of while I was reading. Between May 30th and June 10th we invite you to enter the annals of Heavy Metal Truants fame with challenges from cycling, walking, running, and more. All proceeds will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, Childline, Nordoff Robbins and Save the Children: they’ve been devastated by these troubled times and they kept going, so we’re going to keep going to – join us. We’re not the messiahs, but we can make a difference. The Truants emulates a nigh-on perfect slow burn, generating a pace that makes room for unexpected tragedies as well as silly student antics, drawing out multiple threads of deceptions and lies and a nearly unending river of narrative twists.” From the author of Looker comes this "compulsive and unforgettable novel" (Mona Awad) of razor-sharp suspense about two local librarians whose lives become dangerously intertwined. A more nuanced or interesting protagonist could have made this into a much more enjoyable novel. Our MC however is the typical forgettable young girl who somehow manages to attract the attention of people who seem a lot more fascinating than her...I write seem as I never quite believed that her guy (that's how interesting he is) and her teacher were as clever or as alluring as our narrator told us. And that's where the problem lies: she tells us that these two are such magnetic people. We are never shown exactly why they have such a powerful effect on her. This sort of introspective narrative can work...but here our MC's examination of this period of her life seemed somewhat artificial. This was such a fascinating read that brought to mind two other dark academia favourites of mine - The Secret History and If We Were Villains. The way Weinberg introduced both the characters and the course topics covered was far more accessible than the prior two and, so, a more fast-paced and inclusive read was delivered.
