About this deal

All the paints are watery, but the metallics are even more so, so make sure to be more liberal than usual to bring out the sheen. Army Painter Speedpaint Mega Set 2.0 Review – Testing The first thing to understand is that the latter two paint ranges have a very different formula than Contrast or Speedpaint. They are not based on dye, but on thinned acrylic pigments. Think of Citadel Nihiliakh Oxide or regular acrylic paints thinned with a lot of Contrast Medium. Maize Yellow is another favorite color of mine. Yellow is notoriously difficult to paint, and Maize Yellow feels like cheating. Hoplite Gold is my favourite, it’s more opaque than the other two, but still darkens in the recesses. As the paint pulls from the edges, the white primer shines through which creates a subtle highlight effect. It is a quite muted gold tone though, but the complete range has a few other gold tones I’m very eager to try. Broadsword Silver is a dark cool silver. It has less of a tint than the gold, I think it’s okay but not as good as the gold. Talos Bronze is more like a reddish copper tone and even more transparent, so I recommend adding a second coat. Unfortunately, this paint has a really weird sparkle effect. It looks okayish in real life, but under my bright studio lights the silver flakes stand out as if the pigments haven’t been blended properly. Pallid Bone is a bit warmer and softer than Skeleton Horde, Hardened Leather is very similar to Gore-grunta Fur, while Sand Golem is a warm light brown. Dark Wood is like a mix of Wyldwood and Cygor Brown. Crusader Skin is a bit more reddish than Guilliman Flesh.

If you’re plugged into hobby social media at all you’ve surely heard of The Army Painter’s Speedpaint line. They released hot on the heels of Citadel’s industry-shaking Contrast line, promising to provide a similar one-coat experience. We here at Goonhammer have been using them for quite some time, and figured it was high time we shared our thoughts and favorite paints. As you can see, the Speedpaints go on very nicely. With colours like Zealot Yelow, Sand Golem, and Fire Giant Orange you can create interesting shades of copper and gold or go wild and try out bolder metallic hues, like Plasmatic Bolt on the right leg. Vallejo just recently entered the one coat game just recently with their Xpress Color range, which comprises 23 colours plus Xpress Color medium: They often need multiple coats to achieve a similar level of richness. Also, the pigment-based formula doesn’t really work with zenithal shading, as the opaque pigments will gather in the dark recesses and make them brighter, which is not exactly what you want. Speedpaints become even more affordable when you get them from our partner stores Wayland Games, Element Games, Firestorm Games, and Taschengelddieb, which offer additional discounts of 10% over RRP.

The set also includes an extra-large 100ml bottle of Speedpaint Medium. Priming is an essential part of painting your miniature. With our signature Colour Primers you can save loads of time when painting while ensuring that you have the best possible foundation for a smooth and impressive paint job. In this section we’ll show you the do’s and don’t of priming and talk a bit about why we make our Colour Primers the way we do. But as soon as I got my hands on the Speedpaint dropper bottles, the first thought I had was “I bet I could airbrush with this.” And I gotta say I’m pretty happy with the results. This time, there are three new box sets and even something for retailers! So plenty to sink your teeth into.Magic Blue is a little darker and more intense than Talassar Blue, but with a little thinning it would be very similar. Highlord Blue is a little lighter and more of a prussian blue than Ultramarines Blue, while Cloudburst Blue is very similar to Leviathan Blue. In terms of turquoise, The Army Painter only has a single colour, Plasmatic Bolt, which is similar to Aethermatic Blue, but much deeper and darker. Now, what you CAN do to increase reactivation is to use Speedpaint Medium instead of water. I soaked a cotton swab in Speedpaint Medium and rubbed it over the edges of the Plaguebearer’s sword to remove the paint and enhance the highlights. This works better than just using water. But I feel it’s still a bit more difficult and tedious to pull off than with the old formula. Maybe some other painter or YouTuber can find a better way to make the blending work. Please let me know in the comments about your experiences. The expanded palette Now, these little experiments are all well and good, but what does that mean for practical use? I have to say that unless you paint over with a very light colour, you will hardly notice any reactivation with Speedpaint 2.0. Even then, unlike the old Speedpaints, there is no varnishing needed. One or two additional layers of paint will pretty much remove the bleeding completely. On the Stormcast’s robes I layered and highlighted over Speedpaint that cured for about 20 minutes. As the highlight colours are quite similar, bleeding is not an issue at all. Layering and highlighting over the robes of a Stormcast Eternal painted with Beowolf Blue As you can see, there is more of everything, plus 6 brand-new pastel and 10 metallic Speedpaints. I really like all the new greys, browns, and the expanded selection of skintones. Here are 5 Best Practices to get the most from this awesome new technique to add to your hobby arsenal.

But we all know Contrast isn’t perfect. Some colours do exactly what they are supposed to, like Blood Angels Red and Iyanden Yellow – base colour, shading and highlights with one coat. Other colours are quite thin and feel more like washes, like Aethermatic Blue and Gryph-Charger Grey. And many of the darker colours are rather flat and hardly create any highlights, like Dark Angels Green and Cygor Brown. For this Speedpaint 2.0 review I took a few more samples from the new range. I tried to reactivate the paints after 30 minutes, 2 and 24 hours. Our revolutionary new Speedpaints Metallics are the easiest way to get metallic effects on your miniatures in one simple application. Speedpaint Metallics are the hobby’s first-ever metallic one-coat painting solution, and this paint set is the fastest way to get your hands on all ten! With colours ranging from rich Talos Bronze, to shimmering Broadsword Silver, and glimmering Hoplite Gold – you have the perfect metallic selection for your hordes of plate mail, carapace, and armour. Next, I had my brand-new HQ addition to my list, the Nerotyrant, and with that, my love of Goddess Glow really came through. The speed paint does an amazing job with its color and simplicity, and I didn’t feel any need to use a wash over the paint I was already using. Again, I used the Bony Matter paint, and then I moved into using the Raging Sea paint for the brain matter. For the pipeing that is on the base, I used the Ashen Stone paint which again, was amazing with its coverage. As someone who doesn’t paint often or with much variety, I found Speedpaints 2.o to be a very nice change of pace compared what I’m used to using with the Citadel paints. I did have to use a lot of paint on my brush, and we had to make sure to paint over a white base. With a heavy coat over the models, it was very easy to create some really impressive results.Consistency-wise, they are quite thin, similar to pre-thinned airbrush metallic paints. From left to right: Broadsword Silver, Talos Bronze, and Hoplite Gold from the Speedpaint 2.0 range Before the summer ended, I had the pleasure of winning a GT in Duluth, MN, and that was done partially due to these brand-new models I had gotten painted up. I was only able to get those done thanks to the beauty of the speed paints here. My Psychophage is painted with about four or five primary colors, starting with the Bony Matter paint. The flesh of the tentacles was done with the Goddess Glow paint, which honestly was something I was kind of gambling with and experimenting with, but I was incredibly happy with how that turned out. As you can see, this is a diverse array of shades and variations on every primary colour, though there is one notable omission – white. I found this strange, as though white as a paint can be hard to formulate, it is still one of the most important colours in a painter’s wheel. Since receiving these paints I’ve started using them as a permanent fixture in my painting toolbelt. The range is very flexible and offers a variety of colors and hues that are difficult to find in competing ranges. There are a couple that underperformed compared to other paints in the range so there’s some variance (Nuclear Sunrise and Glittering Gold stand out in my memory as colors I wish I had but the paints don’t quite behave properly) but its certainly worth exploring the range despite this for the colors that are straight magic in a bottle When applying, I noticed that Speedpaints are a bit thinner and runnier than Contrast paints, and the medium pushes the paint into the recesses more aggressively, which helps to create a smoother result even on flat areas. On the other hand, I found Contrast paints slightly easier to control because of their higher viscosity. I felt it was easier to put them on smaller details without accidentally spilling into adjacent areas.
